How in the heck did you notice the #5 cam bearing going bad?

Oil Pressure Fluttered, Motor Started Loosing Power, Stopped, Cut the filter apart and Found "Bad Metal" Metal.

Re: 528 CID Big Block Ford Engine Build

The cam bearings in 460's are very narrow. Once the spring pressure and cam aggressiveness gets too high, the bearings fail to hold up. The ultimate cure is a roller bearing conversion, but there is also a stop-gap fix out there...

There is a wider bearing out there. 351C bearings are wider, but you can't use the entire set. I don't remember the specifics, but if you look up the OD's and ID's of both the 351C and 460, I believe you'll find what you are looking for. (maybe use one bearing out of each set)

At one time, I believe a guy on 460 Ford Forum - Powered by vBulletin was selling these matched up sets. Anyway, it is possible to use a wider bearing on these 460's.

Good Luck!

Re: 528 CID Big Block Ford Engine Build

I had a Clearance Issue, Ended up finding the Cam Journal to be on the high side, Housing bore to be on the high side too, resulting in a stacking of high side tolerances giving #5 a tight fit that didn't feel bad when fitting the cam but odviously a problem. Lesson learned, Measure everything, Don't Rely on Feel and HP Cams Need .002-.003+ Clearance.......

Had the Wider Cam Bearings in the Motor + Roller Cam bearings have issues and a down side too, but you are right they do have a place and an application.

Re: 528 CID Big Block Ford Engine Build

I've been running an IDT Premier based 580" BBF with roller cam bearings for three years now as a street/strip deal including two Hot Rod Drag Weeks and any number of True Street drive to track, race drive home deals. I was worried initially about the cam bearings due to internet 'horror" stories. But they have fuctioned flawlessly. I also run a Peterson external pump set-up. First version of engine made 820 at the crank and a subsequent manifold change increased PMH by 5 so it gained, Valve springs are just shy of 300 on the seat and with 1.8 rockers there is a lot of pressure on the cam. I suspect I would have had cam beraing problems by now without the roller cam bearings. If you are at the aftermarket block phase then I would consider them essential.
