Re: Valve Adjustment made easier

Ooops, correct my last post. Should read every 90 degrees, not 45 degrees.

Re: Valve Adjustment made easier

The balancer is more accurate by far, as is checking on the base circle.

We did this method when looking for a possible tight valve, not really to initial preload setting

In that case, bumping it around to the firing point let us shake the rockers to make sure we didnt have a very tight one.

That was a few years ago, I had to think about why we did it this way, and the bottom line is that it was a quick troubleshooting move, not really a way to do it each time

Re: Valve Adjustment made easier

Hi there, I did mine while running.
I got a '65 289 with adjustable rockers.
Did mine like a chevy, back off till light ticking is heard, tighten 1/2 a turn.
Dont think thats gonna help with a rail or fulcrum but thought I'd throw that in there.

Re: Valve Adjustment made easier

I like the method shown, making sure to watch the valves as well. Tighten until there is no play in the pushrod, tighten down 3/4 turn.

Adjusting while running is good too, only it is a little harder with roller rockers as they don't tick quite like the fulcrum rockers do. They typically squirt oil to the top end quite a bit more as well. Making this a messy ordeal. My rockers (Miller Mid-Lifts) have a small orifice at the pushrod cup and they oil the valvetrain VERY well.

As far as tightening the Poly-Locks:

It takes a little practice, but YOU MUST tighten the poly lock and the set screw AT THE SAME TIME. Not tighten the nut ,then the set screw. If you do that, they WILL back off.

Re: Valve Adjustment made easier

Everyone always seems to be looking for an easy way to adjust valves but why try to remember firing orders, looking at balancer marks, etc? The EOIC method works on any engine, with any cam, and any firing order. Not only is it a simple method to remember, but unless you built the engine, you do not know if the engine builder set the cam "straight up" or advanced or retarded.

I just helped my buddy last night set his valves on a high lift roller and proved to him that the EOIC method is a much better way to gain consistancy on the valve train adjustment.

After setting #1 at .015 gap on the Intake and Exhaust, we rolled the motor over to TDC and measured the gap. The intake was now at .013, and the exhaust was actually starting to open.

IMHO the EOIC method is the easiest and most accurate way to set valves.
