Re: 1978 F250 Exhaust Upgrade

Nice write up, i love hearing more and more about project redneck. I love Ford trucks a 99 f150 was my first vehicle and first ford. I enjoy reading about your two truck projects alot.

Looks to me like he shortened the driver side header then re welded the flange back on to make it work. Looks like a nice clean way of doing it.

Cant wait to see more how tows and tech stories.

Re: 1978 F250 Exhaust Upgrade

Great to see a write up on the exhaust upgrade, the only thing to make it better would have been Magnaflows instead of Flowmasters. Swapped mine over and the difference was night and day. Several dyno operators note a power reduction with flowmaster opposed to Magnaflow (or similar) and glasspack style. Keep the upgrades coming.

Talking Re: 1978 F250 Exhaust Upgrade

Very nice, I just installed an Edelbrock "1826", 650 CFM Thunder Off Road Electric Choke carb(kickdown linkage "1844") on my 1979 Bronco custom.
I chose this Carb because the needle valves are spring loaded and under hard pounding or high angle entry they won't jump or unseat.

I also have Headers and a dual exhaust to go onto this truck, My headers are Flow Teck and my Mufflers are also Flow tech 60s.

The truck currently has one Cat and single exhaust the prevous owner installed the cat to pass fresh air in BC Canada he moved to Ontario and I bought the truck from him.

In Ontario no Clean Air up to 1986 and since this came from the factory with no Cat the one currently on it will disappear.

I must say the power difference just from the carb change and a complete tune up was Incredible to put it mildly so my guess is the Dual Exhaust install should be fantastic.

Two things extra I went with the Edelbrock carb because I was told it would be no problem install.
I found that statement to be very TRUE.

I needed the KickDown extra linkage and that was it.
It took 30 minutes to install and have the truck running including set up on low and high idle as well as idle screws.

Excellent write up! I noticed that you have one of the smaller high torq starters. Did header clearance problems force a change or did you already have that installed?

I've got a '78 F150 that I bought from my wifes grandfather about 10 years ago. It's all original, I've been thinking about doing headers on it and this write up was very helpful. Now I know I gotta borrow my buddies engine hoist before I get started.

Re: 1978 F250 Exhaust Upgrade

I encountered the fit problems with my headers also. My fix was a set of Sanderson headers. They are shorties and I was able to install them from the top without removing any other parts.

Re: 1978 F250 Exhaust Upgrade

I have had no less than five Flowmaster exhaust systems on my various cars and trucks over the years, and they are absolutely the best exhaust products out there! I've had them on small blocks, big blocks, and even in-line 4's, and they are great. I've had them on my '65 Galaxie, '69 Fairlane, '76 Skylark, '85 Mustang, '86 Honda, and even my daily driver, a '99 Tahoe. Great pick on the exhaust, you won't be disappointed.
