Largest rear tires possible on a 64'

Just curious, what is the largest tire I could run on my 64? Right now I have a set of 14x6 Americans with puny 205 70R 14's. What would be the largest tire I could use on these rims with what I believe is factory back-spacing? Oh and I will not roll the fender lip either, any info is appreciated!

I have 15x7 Torque Thrust D's with 205/60R15 BFGoodrich Radial TA's on my 64. My rear springs are little tired. If I don't put around 70 pounds of air in my air-shocks, the tires rub on corners. The problem here is back-spacing. Possible solutions are a narrowed rear end or wheels with a lot more back-spacing. I plan on having some steel wheels made for a set of slicks. Easiest solution may be to have a tire shop figure out the biggest tires that will fit, and then measure for a wheel. Click this link to see a neat (and expensive) tool for this task.

PS: Please repost if you find a combo that works before I do.

The major problem is the low wheel-well opening more so than the width of the wheel housing. My 65 may actually be worse (check out "My Cars"-the opening is real low). Other than that, I think the 64 is real similar.
I have 225/70R14s on 6" rims with 3 1/2" backspacing. I believe that I could fit a 245 if I had the backspacing just right. Any wider than that and you will need to narrow the rear end and widen the wheelhousing.
Dave, with your powertrain, wide tires won't help anyway

my 63 rear end is narrowed.but it did NOT have to be tubbed to get 295-50-15's under it. 10 inch rim 5 inch back space.

First off thanks for all the responses, I didn't expect this to be such a "hot" subject. I really like the idea of narrowing the rear end as highpockets said and cramming in some big fat ol' rollers

Highpockets, exactly how much narrower is your rear end? I was going to build up my 8 inch rear with a 31 or 28 spline detroit locker (do they even make em' for the 8"?), and at the same time might as well get a shorter set of Moser axles and narrow the casing. Any info on what was involved, who did it (I'm guessing currie), and any things you would have done differently would be very appreciated.

Thanks again for all the info and sorry for all the text

If you are going to spend all the money to build up a rearend, go for a 9". Prices between 8" and 9" parts are fairly similar. I vaguely recall Currie listing shortened axles at the same price as stock length and the housings were all the same price too.

The last year, I have been dealing with Dutchman http://www.dutchmanms.com/ out of Portland and have found that they are willing to deal more tham Currie, Moser and a few others. Tese guys are hotrodders / street rodders...not some company who see us only as a $$$ figure.

As for your center section, deal with Randy's in Washington. They will meet or beat just about any price you find with excellent selection of accessories.
No, I don't own either of these companies but I owe them a lot of thanks.
