converting a 5.0
Painless wiring has a kit to add fuel injection to vintage cars. It definitely can be done, but it is much easier to just change to carb yes. As Cord said about intake & carb, that's basically all that needs to be done, to change a 5.0 to carb. So change to intake & carb, and the 5.0 is ready.. well almost..
To put a 5.0 in a Fairlane the oil pan will need to be swapped out, get rid of the double hump, use one from old 289/302.. Maybe the pickup needs to be swapped too??
And the water pump is reverse rotation on 5.0, and the lower hose is on the opposite side from the old radiator, either use old water pump & V-belt setup or swap out radiator, Griffin makes one that will work.
I'd keep the serpentine & buy a new radiator personally. And electric cooling fan, get rid of the fan/clutch on the 5.0. Those fans were plastic anyways, typically they will have cracks with age. Electric fan would be better all around.
Does the Fairlane have AC or Power steering?
Or do you plan on keeping if it does?
These could be stumbling blocks.
If you had a V8 Fairlane to start, then you could reuse any brackets, the PS pump, and go with V-belt, or you could keep the serpentine & find an adapter to mate to the newer pump. You could also take the old oil pan & use it too.
One other thing, back of the heads on the 5.0 there's a egr cross-pipe thingy, it should be removed & holes covered up. I wouldn't keep that crap.
I'd also probably pull out the factory dizzy & buy a new aftermarket Ignition setup, I personally would use MSD, but I know alot of people around here claim they are ****e and break easily.
What year Fairlane are we talking about btw?
And what type of motor/trans does or did it have?
What year 5.0 or do you know?
If it is an earlier model '65 & earlier Fairlane you could run into problems finding headers to fit, those years have tight engine bays with the huge shock towers, check around for what will work, but you would want headers I'm sure. if it's a '66 or later then you should have an easier time with that.
As far as trans go, are you keeping what's in the Fairlane or were you going to take from the Mustang? If you were to want to swap in an AOD to add overdrive you'd likely be chopping an inch off the driveshaft. So if you have the factory trans in there, it'd be easier to let it be, unless you want to change out, but you could have alot more work ahead of you, depending on what all you are planning on doing.
