Free 2-1/2\" or 3\" \"X\" Pipe, Mandrel Bent Exhaust?

Hi folks,
Some of you may remember a few months ago I mentioned a company called Pypes (advertised in Hot Rod and Car Craft) at http://www.pypesexhaust.com was looking into making exhaust kits for 66-69 Fairlane/Torino cars. Well they currently are working on an inventory. They borrowed my 390 powered '66 Fairlane for 5 weeks and fabricated an "X" pipe system in 2.5" & 3". They developed a CNC program to form these pipes on a mandrel pipe bending machine. The kit will include "X" pipe, "H" pipe or straights, a pair of mufflers, over the axle out the back pipes, parallel to the gas tank with mounting hardware. They used my car to fabricate down pipes from the cast iron manifolds and a set of pipes from a set of headers to the pipe of your choice before the mufflers. I sent my FPA FE headers along for the header fitting. For this I get a FREE system of my choice. Now the FREE part for you. Pypes is looking for a '66-'67 Fairlane with a 289 so they can make a set of downpipe models. The downpipes will be offered at an additional cost to those who want them as opposed to headers. The kit will be geared to mostly header fitted cars. If you live reasonably close to Hatfield, PA (just NW of Philadelphia), have a 289, no major modifications that would be very different over stock (such as relocated springs, lowered springs, fuels cell, etc...) and can give the car up for about a week or two you may be the recipient of a complete 2.5" or 3" system. Email me and I'll contact the Production Manager with your details.

If you go on Pypes web site you may notice that a link is set up for 1967-1971 Fairlane exhaust. They will correct that to state 1966-71. I'm pretty certain 70-71 will be somewhat different and may run into some problems. Pypes will work out something if a system doesn't fit. They wanted to include 70-71 because they want to fulfill that market as well, even if it takes a completely unique kit. They are NOT looking for a 70-71 as of yet so please do not contact them on offering your car and expect a free system. They are taking Ford cars one step at a time. They have a division of Pontiac aftermarket parts and have branched out to the exhaust business. They will be at Fords at Carlisle in June if you want to check them out. They will also be going to Ocean City, MD Cruisin' 2005 in May.

Pypes is taking "Pre-orders" right now for Fairlane exhaust kits. I have no idea on pricing, you'll have to contact Pypes and see if they worked it out. I was at their shop on Friday and they did not have a suggested price yet. Check their web site and find the contact info, call and ask for Mike Zimmerman for info on the Fairlane/Torino exhaust. They also have kits for 5.0 Mustangs and '65-73 Mustangs.

I am trying to provide them with some additional info to help them accurately make these systems.
1) Are Mustang 390 GT cast manifolds the same as Fairlane GT manifolds and are GT and non-GT's the same manifold?
2) Same as above but for 289/302 manifolds
3) Are the manifolds the same with manual or auto?

I hope I covered it properly. If I think of anything else, I'll email the group.
Thanks,

Very ambtitous of you to undertake this task. I appreciate that, as I have been to their site occasionally, in awaiting this very announcment. to you.

Now my question is, "How much mods,if any, would need to be applied for different type Headers. I have Hookers on my application for example.

I will be calling them with my order within the next couple weeks most likely. Do you know if they will be offering in stainless?

Thanks again, and many kudos to you...

Stainless is doubtful, I'm sure getting the hook up between header collector and their system will be the only unknow on the system. Sorry that I don't have a more accurate answer.

Doug,

I talked witk Mike Zimmerman this morning, and added my name to the list. Just curious about the mufflers. I have a liking for the Flowmaster series 50 mufflers. That was the direction I had planned. I understand you received the 3" system. Which mufflers did you have installed, and how do you like the sound, as compared to Flowmasters series 50, if your familiar with their sound. He wasn't clear on whether or not a credit was available for those of us with mufflers already in stock. I know that your running manifolds right now, but I just want a little help deciding which muffler from their stock. Zimmerman was very easy to talk with. Thanks for pointing me his way.

I am not tuned in enough to pick out Flowmaster 50 series vs. 40 or 30. I have the mufflers that Pypes gave me. The sound if fair in my opinion but then again the exhaust is not meant for the current engine combo. I yanked the engine today for a total overhaul with 428CJ heads, Comp .571/.571 solid lifter cam , FPA Tri-Y headers and a host of other go fast goodies. I expect the sound from that engine combo to be more to my liking.

I just talked to the guy on the phone there, and he said a rough estimate for the kits will be roughly $400 for the 2.5" and $460 for the 3" header back kit, which does include mufflers. Not sure if you can option out the mufflers though. Too bad I laready have my exhaust done on my car.
