Fairlane 4-speed ?

I bought this fairlane has a 289 4 speed in it.The 4 speed does not look like a toploader. What other types of 4speeds came in the car and are they as strong as the toploaders?

To the best of my knowledge it should have been a top loader for that year .have you put an id ion it yet.

If it's not a top loader then it's a Borg Warner T-10. Don't believe they were OEM in 66 but there is a ton of them around from prior year small block applications.

I bought a toploader and was told by Dan Williams Toploaders that it was from a 66 390 4 spd car, from the casting numbers on the tailhousing. The shifter location was in the middle of the tailhousing, between the Falcon and Mustang locations.

The easiest way to tell the difference between the T10 and Toploader is a T10 has a removable side cover where the shifter forks go into the trans. That's also where you load the gears when building the trans. The Toploader has a stamped steel gear box cover on top, where you load the gears on it hence the Toploader name.

It may not be relevant, but there were some B/W four speeds used in 66. I had a buddy back when I was in the service who bought a new 1966 Comet with a factory B/W 4 speed. He tried to swap it to me for my toploader in my Fairlane, but I wouldn't bite.
