Bio diesel actually pollutes more than petro diesel about the only good thing about bio is no soot. And bio diesel is junk anyways and its never consistent.

Re: diesel in a fairlane?

My only question is with the RPMs. I know this was tried in various military vehicles, but they found there that the diesel may have been better suited, but did not do so at same RPM's, and thus they had to change rear axle ratios, and go to bigger tires.

Same for an auto?

what studies are you basing this on? everything ive read says the opposite, except for nitrogen emissions which are higher in biodiesel. however i would not agree with it being "junk" or not being consistent as many fleets are running biodiesel i do not think a company would run their fleets on something that is junk, risking their company on something that is junk.

Re: diesel in a fairlane?

The 6.4 PSD weighs about 1100 pounds dry takes close to 16 quarts of oil and 35 quarts of coolant. Its a monster to say the least. I think the 6.0 and 7.3 are in the same ball park but a little lighter.

Bio diesel is cleaner than regular no. 2. However, you have to really pay attention to quality control and wash the fuel good. Manufacturers like ford do not warranty biodiesel fuel concentrations above 5% for the reason of back yard brewers and the lack of quality control. One person may make outstanding bio diesel, another might produce absolute crap. Keep in mind you need to service fuel filters more often with bio at $20 a set.

TheDieselStop.com - Diesel Forums is full of psd and bio diesel gurus.

This is for the maxxforce 7, essentially a single turbo more commericial 6.4l psd
  • Configuration: V8
  • Displacement: 6.4L (390 cu. in.)
  • Bore and Stroke: 3.87 in. (98.2 mm) x 4.134 in. (105 mm)
  • Compression Ratio: 17.5:1
  • Power Output: 200-230 hp (149 - 171 kW) @ 2,600 rpm
  • Peak Torque: 560-620 lb.-ft. (759 - 840 Nm) @ 1,400 rpm
  • Aspiration: Electronically-controlled turbocharging with charge-air cooler
  • Combustion System: Direct Injection
  • B50 Life: 375,000 miles
  • Dry Engine Weight: 1,160 lbs.
  • Fuel Recommendations: ULSD (Diesel 1 and 2), Bio-diesel (up to B5)
The DT366 non emission military (6.0 psd)
  • Horsepower: 300
  • Rated rpm: 3,000
  • Torque (lb.-ft.): 530
  • Rated rpm: 1,800
  • Governed rpm: 3,200
  • High Idle rpm: 3,450
  • Configuration: V8
  • Displacement: 6.0L (365 cu. in.)
  • Injection System: Electro-Hydraulic G2
  • Weight: 1,062 lbs. (482 kg)
  • Emission Standard: EPA 1998-2004
  • Fuel: Diesel 1 and 2, JP-5, JP-8, Jet A
  • GCVW: Up to 26,000 lbs.
Can't find the 7.3l specs or the dt444 but you'd want a car geared for 2,000 rpm at 70mph. I thinks thats what our 2008 f-250 does.

Everything I have read lately says biodiesel burns cleaner and has less particulate pollutants than petrodiesel. It's easy to make and titrate. It just requires lye, and ethanol applied to your watse or new vegetable oil. They sell ready to go kits right off the internet.

its in a lot of the trucking magazines and the general consensus is that it sucks. Most of the people running it do it for political reasons . I have some friends that are mechanics for the city bus's around here that are running it and there has been a lot of increased maintenance.

Re: diesel in a fairlane?

I say go for it, it sounds like a really cool swap and you would have tons of torque. there are too many people on this board who cannot comprehend trying something new, and they see it as a wast of money. If you have enough money to pay for the basics and some left over have fun with it, and if you want to build a deisel fairlane, do it. I always post questions on this site asking odd questions and lots of people will turn them down, because they dont see them done in magazines. It will be a lot of work, you will have to fabricate motor mounts, a new fuel system, new tranmission mount (not sure where you are going with our tranny, but a stick would be awsome) and you may have to clearence the engine bay/firewall. The electronis will be different too and you will also have to get an engine manegment system. I checked the weight of a ford powerstoke (7.3l or 444ci) and it wieghes 920 pounds with a turbo on it. so it would be wise to do some suspension strenghthening, as well and chassis work too. Put a big turbo on it and good engine manenement system and you will be hauling a$$ on old grease.
