I did the same swap in my 57 Custom 300. I went from the 312 to a 351 w from a late model bronco. It's still in the process but hav'nt ran into anything crazy. In fact the moter sat right down on the orignal motor mount possitions! It's been an easy swap really.
I did move the radiator and make a new bracket and external fan.
Kool good luck! ~ SPOILER

I had a 302 EFI from an '89 Bronco dropped into my '56 Tudor's engine compartment. Also had the Cavalier rack & pinion put in at the same time. Engine fit in fine - had to fabricate steering connections, move the radiator, and fabricate a new fan shroud.

I'd keep the 312, they are getting hard to come by, and John Mummert has all the stuff you need to make it go fast, not to mention the visual mpact when you pop the hood, everyone expects a sbf swap, be different!
