fuel sending unit and gas tank removal/installation

I just bought a new gas tank and was wondering if anyone has ever replaced their tank before? Is there anything special about removing the sending unit? Do I need a special tool?

Should I just replace the sending unit. It works fine, I am just wondering if these are worth trying to remove from the old tank and reinstall in the new one.

Lastly, should I buy anything else when replacing the tank?

Re: fuel sending unit and gas tank removal/installation

so, I swapped the tank and no BOOM! Yeah!
I replaced the fuel sending unit exactly as it came out and when i put 5 gallons in and fired the car... 5 gallons is showing as full. When I went to the station and filled it up, it is showing REALLY full. So... what could have happened? Any ideas?

I am 100% positive that I installed everything correctly... could it be that the sending unit needs to reset itself (ie, run it to empty and fill up again)... anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks, Eric

Could the sending unit have been installed upside down? Did you check to see that the connection to the sending unit is a clean metal to metal contact? Is the fuel gauge connection tight? I'm no expert, but this may point you in the right direction. Also, is it remotely possible that the wire arm on the sending unit that holds the float could have been bent? Good luck,

Dave
