heater hose help please

Hey Guys, I took my heater hoses off and left them off for awhile so I could replace them with new hoses and forgot which way they went on....yeah that's right, guess I should have taken a picture or something cause I just don't remember and don't want to mess this up.
Lets say I'm standing in front of my 66 fairlane with a 289 and I'm looking at the firewall and see the heater core fittings. Which heater core fitting do I put the heater hose on that comes off the intake manifold? The drivers side fitting or passenger side fitting? And what line does that vacuum shut off valve go in too?
I don't have a picture or manual to look at so some help would be great!

Hehehehe...

OK Rick Take the Drivers side firewall portion of the heater core and hook it to the Manifold, and the Passenger side heater core outlet to the vacuum shut off valve.

I'm kinda wondering does it really matter which heater core fitting you hook the hoses too? What would happen if the manifold hose is hooked up to the passenger side of the heater core? As long as you have the vacuum switch in the right line wouldn't the system still work right?

Re: heater hose help please

yes, it does matter. Do you have 3 outlets on that heater core? it has a common inlet, and one outlet for winter heat, and the other for summer a/c reheat for temperature control. that port is restricted to limit flow. I have a picture of this some where...

Scott... What model is that ride with the 3 tube heater core?

And by the way fella's. with a 2 tube heater core the routing is not directionally specific. It will work either way, but with a 3 nipple situation it's important...

I believe that is a 1967 mustang picture, but a fairlane is very similar, the valve mounting location is more in the center of the cowl...

Actually, you want to feed a coil from the bottom, to purge out air. The outlets on a ford are horizontal, but on of them goes to the bottom of the core. that is the one that gets the hose from the water pump.... HTH

Yes, you are correct, purging the air is important but the water will do it rather rapidly regardless, heater cores, in my experience, aren't big air pocket culprits. They normally will hold less than a quart of coolant.

But lower for the in and higher for the out is a good idea anyways I reckon,

Re: heater hose help please

either way will work, the theory is that the proper connection will allow the core's circuiting to apply the warmest coolant to the warmest air, also known as a counter-flow heat exchanger. this will ensure the warmest possible air leaving the core...
