Re: rearend

In a fairlane a big block car had the 9 inch housing . The 289 car had the 8 inch I think it is . Where ya live ? I got the whole housing and gear , axles , drum to drum I am removing to tub and going with 34 inch in a fairlane . Have no use for it .

As for the disk year , a fairlane had drums in 1966 . The disk in fairlanes didnot come as standard till 1967 . However the 67 disk will fit on the 66 .

Re: rearend

A 90's Explorer 8.8 axle is the same width as my 66 Fairlane's 8 inch. The Explorer tube is a little larger than the 8 inch, and the spring perches are about 5 inches closer center to center, but is otherwise a pretty easy swap. Any Explorer after 96 (I think) came with discs, and had 31 spline axle shafts. Depending on where you live, they can be had pretty cheap, unless there are a lot of Jeep guys around, as they like them too.

Re: rearend

Even the Chevy guys are discovering the 96+ Explorer rears. I am thinking about getting one before the price jumps. Have a buddy that just got one. They narrowed it for a 53 Studebaker. It had 31 spline, posi, discs, and a warranty for about $200.

Re: rearend

I have a buddy that can cut axles and respline them but ya have to watch those . Most will still snap with good hp so I stay away from them . The trouble is 31 spline factory axles has less metal and arenot very hard so they twist into . There is nothing worse than breaking a axle and headed to the wall . I use harden racing axles with 35 spline srom strange , they will also even twist but break less .
