front end rebuild kits?

Hey Guys, I'm ready to buy a front-end rebuild kit and want to get some feed back from others here. This is for a 66 with a 289 and power steering. I saw one kit on Ebay for around $280 or so from Laurel Mountain Mustang which had the upper and lower control arms with ball joints already in plus the other needed bushings and so forth. Thought the price was really good, almost to good if you know what I mean. Similar kits cost almost double that in some of my mag advertisements. I would think changing out the control arms would be the way to go....at least the easiet. I'm keeping this front-end basically stock for the time being...who knows what'll happen later but what do you guys think?

Re: front end rebuild kits?

I was looking at the Laurel Mountain kits as well. They use "midolyne", which Im not familiar with. Supposedly not squeaky like Polyurethane, but I don't know enough about them to say if they are good or not. I almost bought the kit but then stumbled on a better deal from a guy from Fairlane Club of America. I got a Kanter kit, complete kit new in the box from him for about $100 less shipped. I was very happy with the Kanter kit, although it had new bushings and ball joints for the upper control arm vice a new arm. It had a few other goodies that I don't think the LM kit had. I asked for feedback or info on the midolyne kits before, and no response.

I do agree that replacing the upper control arms vice rebuilding them would be the way to go. All things considered, I think the LM kit would be a good deal, but would suggest you check out Kanter as well just to see what else is offered.

Walaby, turns out you made the wise choice with the other kit.....I went to ripoffreport.com and pulled up quite a bit of info about LM and there sales practices...it wasn't good! I think I'll stay away from anything they have to sell.

Hmmm.. interesting. Friend of mine here at work bought a whole bunch of stuff from LM via ebay. Did a complete inventory and everything was delivered just fine.

I'd give Kanter a try for sure... I was very happy with what I received, although the kit I had did not have any instructions with it. Even without, it was pretty easy to figure out what went where.

Re: front end rebuild kits?

i looked heavily at the lm kit as well, but i found some negative anecdotal advice on the midolyne. i ended up with a polyurethane kit from mustangs plus, and so far so good. the poly kit from mp was only a touch more expensive then the lm kit (less than $50 more if i remember correctly.) everybody i asked recommended the polyurethane over rubber or midolyne. pst's polygraphite is apparently great, but almost double the price. make sure whichever kit you decide on has fully assembled upper control arms. i don't know the technical names of the parts, but the upper control arms mount to the body via a shaft on which the control arms pivot. the shaft mounts to the control arm with 2 bushings and 2 large nuts with grease fittings. apparently, the nuts are threaded into the control arms on the outside, and to the shafts on the inside as well, or something to that effect. i've heard getting the shafts mounted on the arms is ungodly difficult, and will have you ruining the threads and running to the machine shop. the mp kit was assembled, so i luckily didn't have to deal with that nightmare.

Re: front end rebuild kits?

I've heard the same thing about the upper control arms.. AFTER I bought the kit from Kanter. The Kanter kit has the parts to rebuld. They went just fine but I could understand what folks are talking about. If I did it again, I'd try to find a kit with all new uppers. But, like I said, mine went back together fine.

Re: front end rebuild kits?

I bought the complete kit from Laural mountain off ebay. The customer service over the phone was great. The parts also look great. I havent had a chance to try them yet but I expect they will be fine.
