289 special is probably something you are seeing on valve cover or air cleaner decal, right? Doesn't mean much as far as performance, etc. If you are asking about distributor timing, probably 12 deg initial is sufficient. Has the motor ever been rebuilt?

Is it anything like a 38 Special?

Reguardless, the HIPO 280 2V 289 or 4V 289 your timing could be either... TDC, 6* or 12* for a stock 289.

SPECIAL is a term FORD used for it's HI-PO engines.

Special is for Short Bus riders, they're "Special" Maybe you got a Slow 289....

Why is mine called a 289 Special? The one and only reason is you are special because the engine is not. It must have been a marketing thing. I saw some with gold 289 emblems on the fender and gold decals on the valve covers on a stock 289 2 barrel. I had a set of those gold 289 emblems but I lost them some where.

the 289 "special" is special because it's not a 260.... just a regular 289
