Remove my dash...how?

Hey Guys, How do I get my dash pad off my 66 Hardtop to find this really bad rattle under the dash? I couldn't find any screws from the top and only found the ones under the instrument panel...where's the rest? Sure hope I can see enough under there to find that rattle, any help would be great.

There's a number of "pins" with speed nuts on them at various points on the underside of the dashpad. You have to remove the instrument panel, and possible the glove box and just reach around in there for the pins. Undo the speed nuts and it will lift off. Don't remember how many there are.

Mike, thanks for info, it figures there under there somewhere. Shouldn't be to difficult to locate them all.

Re: Remove my dash...how?

i'd try to locate the rattle first. if you have to, get some else to drive while you look under the dash.
removing dash pad is a hassle. some 10 nuts to be removed. the cluster can be brittle and be sure to put a rag or cloth on the column when removing it.
is it something in glovebox? wiring harness or heater box related item?
i doubt its the dashpad itself.

just my thoughts as i have removed and replaced my 67 unit.

Re: Remove my dash...how?

Ranch67, I know it's not the dash pad and I did get it to stop once when I put my hand up under the dash and sorta moved things around but the rattle came back. I'm hoping by taking the dash off I can see better just where the rattle is. I thought about stuffing some foam pad up under there to keep the small stuff from moving around but figured it might catch on fire or something.

Re: Remove my dash...how?

I'm not sure if the benefit is worth the hassle. Usually, the dash pad is stuck to the metal part of the dash from the head of the sun, and if its never been removed before you run a good chance of putting a kink into the vinyl or otherwise doing something to ruin its appearance. The worst part is though that after you remove it, you are only left with maybe a 6 or 7 X 12" hole on each side of the dash, and the opening from the gauge cluster. And, because of the rake in the windshield, its pretty hard to get a good direct view down into the dash. In all honestly you're better off putting the seat all the way back, opening the door, and laying with you back on the floor pan looking up underneath the dash on each side with a good flashlight.

Just my 2 cents

Will

Re: Remove my dash...how?

Neverunning67, that's just what I needed to hear! I knew there would be some reason or obstruction such as not being able to view from the top as needed....not to even mention a messed up dash pad, I don't want that! I agree with you on this one....time to lay on my back and poke around and hope for the best....Thanks!

No problem... glad I could help. Something you might want to look at while your under there is the flasher cans, they used to flop around in my car and rattle on the steel dash until I tied them out of the way.

Good Luck!
