302 to FE swap
Hey guys I have a chance to buy a build 352 FE for 200 bucks and I am considering dropping it in my 67. Does any one know what all changes will need to be made? Motor mounts headers transmission. Is there anything I am missing? Also I know the headers are a little different from 427 to 390s does anyone know where I can get the headers to fit. Thanks

Re: 302 to FE swap
Motor mounts from Crites are the most inexpensive. As far as headers, need to know the casting numbers on your heads.
If they are C6AE-R then you need 6113 CJ headers, if they are C8AE-H you need something different, probably FPA
Tranny depends on what you have now, but you need an FE bolt pattern. If you run a C-4 now, you need a C-6, if you run a 4 speed, you just need the right bell and z-bar setup
You'll also probably need a bigger radiator and will def need the correct shroud.

Re: 302 to FE swap
I am running a t-5 tranny and an electric fan. I am going to go look at the motor and pull some casting numbers. It may not even be a 352 could be a 390. I have the interchange manual so I will cross reference everything

Re: 302 to FE swap
Let me know, I have done a couple in Fairlanes/Comets, and 2 in Mustangs. The mounts are easy, as are the headers once you know the exhaust port design and bolt pattern of your heads.
You'll also need a front sump (car) oil pan if it doesnt have one needless to say.
I have not ever put a T-5 behind an FE, but I believe the two options you'll have are either a spacer between the tranny and the bell, using a car bellhousing, or use a truck bellhousing.
Oh, one last thing, dont buy fancy valve covers if you have power brakes until you measure. The nice Pentroof Shelby/Lemans style v/c and many aftermarket wont fit. CJ v/c and many of the lower ones work well though

Re: 302 to FE swap
manual steering manual brakes. My t-5 is cable operated so the toploader bell is not an option right now. un less I convert to z bar linkage and what not. My next question is what are the opinions on a 352. I know the 331 352 390 406 410 all share the same block... are they the same strength. I also know the 428 cj and 427 blocks are the strongest. cj for the ribbing and 427 for the 4 bolt cross mains, how much power can the 352 fe block take. My plans are to stroke the block and add a turbo. This motor I am buy was rebuilt 3 years ago and the owner put 4000 grand into the rebuild so I am buying it for 500 bucks and he is throwing in a 72 351 windsor w tranny, along with a buch of other stuff for free. He is an older gentleman and he told me he is just getting to old to build hot rods anymore. I see it as a good chance to learn FE motors. I have been a small block guy since I was 15... question is would it be worth installing a 352. Current motor is a 302 w 185 afr heads and a big cam. was in the process of building a331 stroker, but thnis is a cheaper bet(sorta).

Re: 302 to FE swap
Well without swapping bells it wont bolt to an FE. I am sure there are ways to keep your cable operated clutch, but you will need a new bell
However, to answer your other question, any standard FE block is good to 500 hp, beyond that they tend to split between the cam and crank bores.
However, its very hard to break 500 hp without aftermarket heads or power adders

Re: 302 to FE swap
As far as the swap goes it's a bolt in transition since the 67 came with a big block, the ideal way is to find a big block donor car. I just put a 428 in a 69 Falcon and the only part that does not carry a Ford part # is the exhaust system. Now as far as the 352 goes it's probably not gonna be worth the effort or $$$, onofficially FE stands for Friggin expensive and since you've been a small block guy you're in for a real awakening. Dollar per horsepower it makes more sense to go with a stroker small block than to do a 352. Check the boneyards you never know, a guy here just picked up a 66 Tbird with a running 428 for $500.00. Another option is look around for a F700 or bigger Ford truck with a 391 FT engine, a lot of those will take a 428s 4.13 bore and a lot of them even have the 428 casted inside the freeze plug. It's gonna cost you the same to do a 352 as a bigger CI so if you start with something bigger your $$$ will go a lot farther. You can do 450 HP easy with a 428 with a good cam and some head work and get a ton of tire squealing, stump pulling low end torque. Yeah and a big block looks very impressive sitting between those shock towers....JMO

Re: 302 to FE swap
I went and looked at the motor today. I pulled a valve cover and everything is real clean. The 351w turned out to be a 351c with an FMX tranny attacted 68000 original miles, the 352 has c4ae heads and is a c4ae block. toploader bell attached. I can have all for 500 bucks. i am considering buying it all just to sell. I'm sure I can make mor ethan 500 bucks off of all of it. I like my small blocks but i have always wanted a big block. There is even a chance that it could be a 390. The guy claims it is a 352 because 352 is cast on the block. I am also guessing that the internals are 352 also. the guys nephew built the motor about 3 years ago and spent 4000 doing it. Do you guys think what i would be getting is worth 500? Can I sell it all and get my money back and then some or would it not be worth my time? So for 500 I would get both motors and the FMX

Re: 302 to FE swap
All later FE's aside from 427s have 352 on the block.
I would think you'd break even at the least and possibly make money depending on the parts.
