Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

Has anyone used this disc brake setup on a 66'? The only thing that worries me about this setup is that it calls for a specific wheel and size. I have already bought wheels for my car and don't plan on buying more just to fit this disc brake setup. I emailed "Vintage Venom" and asked if the kit fit a 66' Fairlane, and he said I "SHOULDN'T" have a problem. It seems like a simple setup to install. Plus, I have access to Cobra brakes.

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

talking about the 13" cobra brakes? No way around it they require a 17" or bigger wheel. Maybe some 16 inchers will clear but doubtfull. No way they will work with 15" or smaller.
mustang steve sells a similar kit, you could ask him on his forum.
FYI FORD - MustangSteve's Ford Mustang Forum

hope that helps.

Yeah the 13" brakes is it! I already have 17" wheels, but I don't know what offset I have. I have 17" polished torque thrust, 17x7 front and 17x8 rear.

Well measure the backspacing then ask mustang steve, those are popular wheels with the mustang guys so he should be able to give you some good input. In case you dont know how to measure the backspacing, here is a site that shows you how.

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

I am assuming I have standard offset on my wheels. Next question! If you can install Cobra 13" brakes with this kit, why can't you install 11" GT brakes with this same kit?

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

I think the reason they don't offer a kit for the 11" brakes is that the caliper would be mounted 1" closer to the center and there isn't as much room to make an adapter bracket. I am working on a set of brackets that would mount pbr calipers from a 99 to 04 mustang to a set of stock spindles using Granada rotors. Still not much room to work with.

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

Hey thanks for the info stvrrr. I have a friend that has a 95' Cobra and a 95' GT. The Cobra is junk, so he is stripping everything out, and installing it on the GT. I asked him if he changed the caliper mounting bracket when he put the Cobra brakes on the GT and he said no. And I don't beleive him at all. So we spent the next hour arguing as to why the GT mounting caliper will not fit the Cobra brakes, and he still says he didn't change the bracket. But anyway, the way you explained it is exactly the way I had it pictured in my head, and what I also tried to explain to him, but it didn't make any difference.

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

The calipers are different between the cobra and the regular mustang. It is the caliper itself that has the different offset built into it that allows for the use of the big rotors or the small ones. The calipers that I am using for the swap on my Dad's car are for the 11" brakes. If I were using cobra calipers on the 11" rotors, they would "bolt on" even closer to the center of the rotor on the adapter bracket, because of the longer reach. So in short your friend unbolted his stock brakes and put the big rotors on and bolted the cobra calipers on without having to modify anything. Here is a picture comparing the two styles of calipers. Notice how far down the mounting holes are on the cobra's

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

Are you using the Vintage Venom brackets and spacers on your dad's car? So can you tell me what I would need to put the 11" brakes on my car?

Re: Vintage Venom Disc Brakes

No I am making custom brackets to mount the PBR caliper (like the top one in the picture) and using Granada rotors with the stock drum brake spindle.
