Thunderbolt weight savings

Looking to make my '64 Fairlane more like a Thunderbolt. The front fiberglass bumper and tear drop hood are a given. How much weight would I shave off with glass fenders? This will be street/strip car. Trying to figure out if it is worth going to glass fenders. Seems glass doors (if I can find any) would be a bigger weight savings, though further from the front of the car.

Re: Thunderbolt weight savings

you can also get a fiberglass trunk lid... if its a street car you might want to ask yourself how far you want to go before you compromise your safety. I think doors might be going a bit far (at least in my books) I have the hood and both bumpers fiberglass and Im considering going back to the metal one in the rear (I'm more concerned with being rear-ended by someone than me driving into something) you might also cosider cutting out the trunk center support, and going to an aluminum rad. (that saves more than you might think)

I think crites just started selling fiberglass doors. They only have them for the hardtop though, not the sedans.

Re: Thunderbolt weight savings

Thanks for the input. Will likley keep steel trunk lid and original rear bumper. I don't see a lot of reason for trimming any weight aft of the rear axle. Seems better for traction to keep some back there.

Ultimate goal for car is limited use on the street and fun at the track. Going to keep the small block and put in a stick trans. I currently have a 5-bolt 289. T-10 and all associated parts are waiting to be installed. I want to get deep into the 12s and maybe tickle 11s.

Re: Thunderbolt weight savings

You can take the weight off the rear and still get the car to hook. It just depends on what you plan on running for rear suspension. I had my Sport Coupe down to 2450lbs at one time and hooked really hard. I used ladder bars and coil overs.. I know a few guys with stock rear with CalTrac bars pull the front wheels. Its all about the combination.

Glass or steel bumpers is just your choice. Safety at slower speeds, you want steel. Faster speeds it isn't going to mater much!!

I havent seen the Crites doors, but Iv had their bumps and hood. Not very good products and their customer service SUCKS!.. I gutted my doors and hole sawed the crap out of them. Nice and light now. I have a cage in the car so Im not worried about side impact. I run removable lexan windows now but I used to run the glass without the regulators. I used a piece of seat belt strap fastened to the bottom of the window, ran it up though the window opening and had a snap on the bottom of the door. Just pull and snap and the window is up and secure.

Do take as much as you can off the front. I use metal fenders. The only fiberglass fenders I could find didnt save all that much in weight. Besides, I have the habit of leaning on the fenders when Im working on the car and I dont want to worry about damaging the fiberglass.

My 2 cents
Good luck..

Charlie
