Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

I have considered installing Randell's rack system. Home Page
I think a Mustang system can be used if two aluminum block spacers are used to compensate for the wider frame.
Total Control Products Also makes a narrow frame kit.
There is always the Rod & Custom Mustang II kit that is an easy install. See the post from Jetfixer.

There is a complete article on the Fairlane Club of Amerca members forum where a fellow did the complete Fatman install on an early Meteor. Go there it is great reading.

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

Just finished the Fatman coil over/power Rack & pinion install in my 62, I do advise you to look over Paul's posts re-his install at the Fairlane Club website, I don;t think i could have done the install myself without alot of frantic e-mails to Paul, who, was extremely helpful.
And,although it may not be necessary for the Fatman install, Do get the Shock Tower notch kit form RRS, the extra room for headers & just to work under the hood is worth every penny the notch kit costs.
Also, Fatman Fabricators, namely, Phillip,(yea, i called em so many times i know their # of by heart!) were very helpful with any little snags, (& there are snags) i ran into. i.e.- The first rack they sent me (i sprung for the compete kit) was for a 66 F;lane, after puzzling over it for 2 days i finally called Fatman who sent me a new rack (to Canada) the next morning, refunded a portion of my initial shipping costs & called every couple of days to see how i was making out!
Fatman;s tech support was/is,especially in this day & age of automated phones, just outstanding

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

Even if some of us are not ready for the Fat man kit it is good to hear your feedback. Mine may get one some day. Sounds like a good company.
Why do you need the RSS part, is it some thing extra?

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

I personally think the RSS kit is over priced. Since I have done the Crites shock tower modification I chose to cut the 63 out similar to that and used just sheet metal and saved the money for other things.

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

It sounds like the RSS kit for notching the towers is like the Crites Kit?
So, it just provides extra room for headers.

As 44WJS says, I have a post with some pictures of the Rod & Custom Mustang II kit that I installed in my 64.
Still has my vote.

I would like to have one of their rear coil over kits and modify it to install in my car. Maybe one day.

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

When a Mustang II front suspension is done, is there any other bracing added that connects tht firewall/cowl area to the frame rails. If you cut apart these cars or have changed over a complete front clip, you will soon realize there is very little that attaches the front frame area to the rest of the car. Kind of scary but true. Those braces from the cowl to the shock towers are there for more than just looks.

Re: 62 rack and pinion conversion

I have cut some of these cars apart. I agree that there isn't much to them.
You could add some additional bracing if you desire to, And I have thought about it. More for looks then being worried about the car coming apart.

The Mustang II kits and swaps have been around for a long time. And there are thousands of them running around.

Fatman fabrications sold and still sells them also. And they are one of the ones pushing that they are not safe. Seems like they started saying that after he came up with something new. Maybe I'm wrong?

To each there own on which way you or they go.

I'm happy with my Rod & Custom kit. No issues or indications with my allignment going out of adjustment to make me believe that the car is coming apart.
