window wont roll up

New to Ford and this forum. Just landed and sweet 66 Fairlane, got her home and found that the driver side window will not roll up. It goes up about an inch and then locks up. I removed the panel to take a peek. All looks ok and the channels are greased, I think it's the crank.

Since I don't have a repair manual yet, anyone have any tips on how to remove the crank??

I think you will find the regulator is worn out the spring looses it tention or breaks in there its a common concern and a hard item to find. Iv been told you can take them apart and flip the spring but this is very dangerous in dosent look like fun.If you are looking for parts iv got lots of pieces. No regulators of course.

Re: window wont roll up

Chuck, I had the same problem myself and finally beat and pulled my window all the way up so I didn't have to worry about rain, I'm not saying that's what you should do but I already had another window regulator that I got off ebay. Getting one off ebay doesn't always assure you'll get a good one but I did. I think the smaller wire spring in the hand crank mechanism is broke so it's history. What you can do is replace that small hand crank mechanism by drilling out the three rivets and put a new one in.....the only problem with this is getting that small crank mechanism just by itself. I've got one but I had to order a new 67 Mustang window regulator which cost me $67. I haven't replaced that part yet to my original regulator but I will when I get around to it. I've been working on other stuff and since that window regulator off ebay is working I'm leaving it alone. No one out there makes a new regulator for 66-67 Fairlanes sorry to say. Now which ever way you go get back with me and I'll tell you how to take that old regulator out a lot easier then what the manual does.

It's either the crank teeth, or the glass hanging up in the vertical channel or the regulator's position....

If it is only about one inch as mentioned, check the plastic rollers too. They are not often seen easily. They get full of goo, do not turn, break off, or flatten on one side. I used to get 1/2 dozen of them, and store in ash tray for evential use.

Yep, if you got a bend regulator arm it will wear out the rollers in a heartbeat. They are $0.94 cents each at a mustang shop...

Re: window wont roll up

Thanks for all your comments. I finally got the window to roll up and down but it took a little 'muscle', thankfully nothing gave and/or broke. But now after all my messing around with the window, now when it's rolled up the back is not up all the way, creating a small gap(as seen in the pic). I've gone in and tried to play with the window alignment but no luck. My door does sag a little bit so I think this is the main problem.

Re: window wont roll up

Make sure the Rollers in the window channel are good to go. Then get the hinges repaired...

Glad that you got back to us.

Re: window wont roll up

Hiya Chuck, Did your window sag at all before you had all the problems with it? I know when I changed both of my door regulators I ended up with a small gap between the windows at the top. I messed and messed with the adjustments to only make it better but not perfect and my doors don't sag much at all. Have you tried moving the rear window stop up as far as it'll go? I ended up making the slot in the stop piece longer to get the window to go higher in the back. You still might have a little of the gap but it'll be better.
