61 comet V8 new to this...

Ok here's the deal... I'm buying a 61 Comet and know nothing about them other than that I want to put a 351w in it... Thats it thats all I know, well ok I also know I'll probably use a C4 and a 9". I want about 300hp nothin too fancy just something with some guts. Can anyone please help me? I want to start finding goodies for the car but Im not sure what I need. btw the comet is the same as the falcon in terms of engine bay size right? What other similarities are important? Please help me out guys, thanks in advance!

gripstang...welcome. You need to check out the post about putting a 351 into a Falcon on this forum. Same difference.

If you use the serach funtion on this board you'll find who else has done this and what they had to do. I'm considering something like this my self for my '60 Falcon which is REALLY tight. Good luck

Hey Gripstang,I like early Comets,it must be the fins!
Falcons and Comets are the same under the hood so anything that works on a Falcon will work on a Comet. You could make a nice quick street car by using a late model 302 roller cam motor,a C4 and a 8 inch Maverick rear. Put a 4bbl in place of the F.I., use some early Mustang 289 headers and you would be close to your 300HP for cheap.Just my thoughts on the subject.

Must be the fins, yep I agree I wish I still had my 85 5.0 woulda made a nice motor for the Comet. I was also thinkin about a 302 347 stroker kit. I've never built an engine before and I think it would be a really great project for me and my wife. My father in law built the 170 (?) in the Comet and it runs fine he has built a bunch of motors so he could kinda oversee the project... things to think about

Wait a second Gripstang! My wife and I were driving down from the Sacramento area where we were visiting my Dad. We were travelling down Highway 99 yesterday, passing through Tulare betwee 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. (approximately), and we passed an early Comet in grey primer which we both looked at and said, "Cool!". That would not by chance have been your car could it? I doubt there is a whole fleet of early Comets in Tulare. Please advise.

Nope thats not it, although I do know the one you are talking about. It was probably on Blackstone ave. The one I'm buying is white. Checked on some interior stuff and I found a place that will do both bench's in vinyl and tweed (custom, whatever patern or embroidery) a headliner and carpet for 1k. Not sure how much I'll allocate for paint but I can't stop thinking either black or black and white... it's gonna be hot though... Hmmm how much is a Vintage Air kit? Oh I just re-read and you said it was on the freeway... lol I'm a dork. Do you remember anything else about it? Did it have a big sticker?

Honestly, we were moving so fast in a borrowed BMW Z3 convertible we hardly got a look at it. But it was an early Comet with "cat eye" tail lights which look so cool, moving slowly in the right hand lane, in grey primer and lowered. I love those cars. In fact, I almost bought an early Comet but went with the '61 Falcon. I have seen only a couple early 'mets customized, and the best one I saw had been chopped a few inches, tubbed and slammed over some serious meats with a cage inside, painted black. God knows what kind of engine it had, but obviously a V8 on steroids by the way it rumbled. Simply gnarly. I'd go with black. It makes them look sinister. Hey, if you can some pictures we'd love to see them. Good luck.
