T-5 in a a 64 Comet

I'm considering useing a T-5 in a 64 Comet I just purchased. I want to use the Z-bar set up still, what do I need other then the bellhousing adapter to do this? Is the throw out bearing the same? Is the pilot bushing the same? Basically is the adapter all I need? I know the input and output shafts ar e the same and the T-5 is the same length as the 3spd top loader, but then you add in the 1/2 spacer and it sets the tail back a 1/2". Im assuming this might cause some problems with the drive shaft length. I am also aware of the need to make a new trans crossmember. My main concern is the stuff inside the bellhousing. Thanks for any info given.

As far as the guts inside the bellhousing (and the bellhousing itself), it's all T-5 stuff. Nothing from a toploader works. I would suggest reconsidering the Z-bar set up, which can drive you nuts when trying to fit headers. Additionally, some of them need to be adjusted a lot or they kink and do weird things. I would do away with the Z bar and go with a cable clutch activator, which is very clean, very easy to install and almost eliminates header fitment problems. Check out www.moderndriveline.com. He sells the cable and the crossmember for your application, as well as everything else you would need. I went with him on my T-5 conversion (into a '61 Falcon) and am very pleased with the outcome.

I used the T5 bell with the fulcrum on mine, kept the Z bar and it worked like a charm. Don't forget, with the mustang t5, you'll have to cut a body crossmember right where the shifter will come up through the floor pan. No big deal, but you'll want subframe connectors to make sure you compensate for the loss of ridgity. Dark Horse has kits for this swap into Falcon/Comets now (on ebay) and I've found them to be very helpful and accomodating with my endless questions about my latest project.

Thanks for the info guys...with the links provided and some big time research ive found this to be one easy swap. Esp if you have access to a welder and the ability to fab your own parts.

Fxcomet: I planned on the conectors already so the loss of the flimsy cross brace is no biggy. What type of shifter handle did you use on yours?

The shifter's gonna be back much further on your car than mine. I used the Hurst T5 shifter and heated and bent the very end of the handle rearward. You'll probably be able to use the shifter as is. The Hurst is a sweet piece, old school chrome handle and a white 5 speed round knob. Just make sure you have the stops adjusted properly or you'll run the risk of bending a shift rod.

Yeah I figured out that the clutch and all that works just fine...I already went out and got a t-5 bellhousing and plan on adding the block and fulcrum to it and use the standard Z bar setup...Dont want one of those stretchy cables in my car..hehe

Now I just gotta make a bracket for the z bar on the block since I have a block without the damn hole for the pivot.

Yeah they have it...for $70 and its just two welded flats with three holels..guess ill be makeing that part too. I just cant bring myself to spend that kinda cash on such a simple part.

In all of todays digging in the garage thru all the mustang parts I decided to check out a mustang column to see if its the same...it is but 3" longer so after cuttin 3" off of it I can have a column in the car without the garbage on the right side. and clean up the lower half by not having that part of the shifter garbage there as well. Guess it pays to have a garage full of mustang parts..hehe
