how do you remove a rear end?

can someone help an unfortunate soul and tell them how to remove a rear end out of his 62 Comet? It has the 6 cyl rear in it and i got a 1970 Bronco 9" with disc to put in there now. However i'm confused (but stubborn because i haven't much looked at it) because the brake backing plates will hit the leaf springs if i unbolt everything and try to weasel it out the side. Or when i jack up the car on stands will there be enough clearance?

thanks

easy way.

jack up car, put stands on rear frame rail behind door, remove shocks, u-bolts, vent hose, brake line connection on axle tube, parking brake cables, and driveshaft, jack up axle on the center section until it clears the springs. Remove shackles off the end of the springs, and push down on the springs, lower jack and slide out the rear end.

hard way.

most of the above but dont remove shakles. Jack the car up higher (repositon the jack stands) so the springs are bowed, then jack UP the rear axle so the backing plate will clear the spring and using a floor jack, pull the rear end out from the other side (carefull, its heavy and if it falls, it will hit the springs hard and rock the car so make sure its on the jack good) and pushing down on the end of the axle your at to tilt the backing plate up to clear the last set of springs. If you do it this way, get some help and be ready to run.

Drop the springs, makes it easier to install the new rear end and alot safer.

Rick

I did it the hard way, alone, in 30 minutes. The rear wasn't as heavy as I had thought. Now just to assmble my car.
