Better fuel filler ideas?

Hello,

I’m a new-bee. This is my first attempt to post a question.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a better way to fill his or her gas tank on these Falcons. I have a 1963 ½ Falcon and filling up with the California nozzles is a time consuming mess.

I was toying with the idea of barrowing fuel-filler neck from another vehicle, and putting the filler in the trunk.

What do you folks think?

The filler neck in the early Falcons had a flawed design. It will "burp" and spill gas gas out onto your nice paint and chrome.

I corrected my 65 by installing a short straight filler tube from an older Ford pickup. I had to open the trunk in order to put gas in, but it was worth it.

Make sire that your vapor tube is clear, and use a non-vapor gas cap.

To close in the rear panel, I cut the original filler neck off in the trunk, leaving a short neck in order to install part of an inner tube (double clamped) to deter people from putting gas into your trunk. Just reinstall on your car with old cap and you're done.

I have found I think that most Falcon owners have figured this out...is that you have to hold the nozzle and handle at about four o clock for the fuel to flow properly because of the sharp bend in the fuel spout.
Also amost Union 76 stations for some reason still have the old school nozzles which make them easy to use.

What I did was simply got a whole new filler neck, from a Mustang, and cut it short, connected it with rubber tubing, and now I pop the trunk to fill up. No fuss, no muss when filling now. When I got the body work done I had the filler hole covered up like it was never there, and I think it looks better. It always drove me nuts to see F A L o C O N in the back!

Thanks all around.

Looks as if several of you have already done the conversion to trunk fill, I will look into that as well.

Perhaps while I am in there I will cover the gas tank with metal. Makes me nervous having the tank just sitting exposed. A loose toolbox could puncture that thin sheet metal.

Put me down as another who has moved the filler to the trunk. The original gas cap is saftey wired shut so it isn't stolen, have you priced one recently?
Putting a sheet metal "cover" over the exposed tank would be a good idea. That design sure wouldn't pass todays safety standards.

Yeah. Along that line, I've created an aluminum sheet metal "splash guard" that I Dzus fasten behind the rear seat. It looks cleaner from the trunk not seeing the rear of the seat, but most importantly, should I get hit from behind and go "BOOM", I might have a few seconds to bail out rather than being incinerated from burning fuel dumping into the cabin.

Vince,
That splash guard is a good ideal, have not gotten around to that one yet, also like the nozle in the trunk but even a couple of drops or fuel spilt in the trunk can ruin your ride for a while till the vapors go away.

Jim, I had been wanting to secure my cap in the same fashion with a wire but have not yet, I rember the GT Mustangs had that saftey wire on them. I lost one once and they are not cheap.

The cap is safety wired on the inside of the trunk and can't be loosened at all.The only way it's coming off is if the trunk is opened and the wire cut with some wire cuttters.
