falcon poping fuses- help

hey guys.

so i havent driven the car in a couple weeks(started) but not driven. so i decide to take the car out the other night and everything is fine till i turn on the headlights POP the lights go out -no tail lights,no radio,no dome light, but headlights are still on. i finally found what looks to be a fuse box in the dash by the headlight switch.
i changed the broken fuse and again POP when the lights come on. i tried several times with wiring, fuses, disconnecting the battery.
so cam the headlight switch have gone bad?
is something suddenly shorting out.
please help me im getting frustrated i hate wiring.

thanks again
richard

Does it pop as soon as you turn your lights on?

Sounds like a relay has gone bad, and when you put on the headlights, it puts too much juice to handle and pops the fuse.

It's not the headlight switch but probably a short in the tail light or dash light wiring. The tail lights, license plate light and dash lights are all on the same circuit.

Check the wires going to the tail lights and the license plate light. Maybe something in the trunk is contacting the wires causing one of them to short out. Turn the radio off too, maybe it is shorted out but originally it isn't on the same circuit as the lights. The horn and headlights are the only items with a relay and if the headlight relay was bad the headlights wouldn't have worked at all.

There is no relay on the early Falcons for the headlights. That's part of the problem. I would guess that you have put newer halogen lights in and the old wiring just can't handle the increased demand. You should add a headlight relay kit to reduce the electrical load on the switch and factory fuses.

Painless Performance has some nice kits that will fix it right up.
