\'64 Questions

Hey all, I'm so glad I found you guys! I've searched for about a year for a Falcon forum, and I finally found you today.

First off, this is what I have:
'64 Falcon Hardtop
MII Front IFS
Versailles 9" disk rear
EFI HO 306 with T5 (installed but not wired)

The questions I have:

MII Front IFS:
Instead of notching the frame, I widened the MII crossmember. I hate strut rods, so I'm looking to go with tubular upper and lowers and QA1 adjustable coil-overs. Surely someone else has gone this route. By widening the crossmember, I will now need longer tie rod ends or extensions. Any suggestions? Anyone know of an affordable place to find control arms or coil overs?

Rear Suspension:
Will a pair of "mid eye" leaf springs from a '65-'73 Mustang bolt right into a Falcon? I've seen a lot of archived posts about minitubbing, which is something I am interested in. It looks like the limiting factor for wider wheels/tires is the frame after minitubbing. Has anyone attempted to do anything about that? Perhaps thats why it's called minitubbing!

Engine/Driveline:
With the upper plenum of the 302, I look to have some major interference with the brake master cylinder. Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Dual-cylinder manual brakes? Turn the plenum around?

I know these questions are kind of vague, and probably something you see everyday, but I really appreciate any help or comment.

Thanks!

Welcome to the board, will have to post some pic's of your 64
I opted out of the MII conversion so I have no info for you with it but there are a few here on the board that have done so.
I do not think that the Mustang leafs will fit on the falcon but if you are going to mintub and alter the rear section of the frame I'm sure you could relocate the hangers and place them where they need to be. There are a few tubbed Falcons here on the board if you do not get a response try contacting Auto Works in San Diego CA. http://www.autoworks.cc/ or Mustangs Plus in San Jose CA. http://www.mustangsplus.com/Merchant...ore_Code=MPFMP or Delta Bay here in Los Angeles http://www.deltabaymustang.com/ that might be able to set you straight.
Dual master cylinder would be a plus, sounds like you have power brakes and a booster? There are some small dia boosters out there that should not present any clearance issues. I have even seen a Geo booster on a Falcon, small dia bolt right on. I have one I pulled ay a wrecking yard I might install on my 63. I used a JMC dual manual unit on my 64.
Good luck,
Ras Daniel

the mini tubbing isn't that hard. use the Crites kit to move the springs inboard of the frame. then widen the wheel well to the frame rail. you will have to notch the gas tank on one side for clearence. i have 295/50/15s on a 8 inch wheel, 6 inch backspace without cutting the rear fenders. try some street rod suppliers for tie rods. they use a lot of MII stuff.

I don't think the mustang rear leafs will fit. My 64' falcon has 2 1/2" rear leafs and the 65'/66'mustang traction masters I bought are for 2' leafs. Needless to say the traction bars are for sale. Dearbornclassics has decent prices on replacement springs. just do some measuring first. I also have the crites relocation kit on my car, made lots of room only draw back is the front spring mount won't allow for caltrac type traction bars.

Have any friends in the machining biz have them make you extensions for the length you need for the wide application. My 60 was easy to do by just notching the frame. If you can get out to any swap meet keep your eyes open. I found a set of tube lowers for mine for 125. I fully tube mine out and put a 12 point cage in it also.

Thanks, coolfalcon. I've been continually admiring your car for a couple of days now. Is there any way you could post some "in progress" pics of the work you did on the back half?
