alternator/generator swap 1963 ranchero

Need help getting the wiring correct on the new voltage regulator to convert my old generator to an alternator. I have two different wiring diagrams from the forums and they are both different and do not have the correct color coding on the wires as per fords original wiring diagram. The wires on my original 3 terminal voltage regulator are as follows.
1. Black/yellow 10 ga. from BATT. terminal on regulator to starter relay. left side 2.Solid black wire from BATT. terminal into wiring harness to Ignition switch.
3.White wire from FIELD term on regulator to Field terminal on generator.
4.Yellow/black 10 ga. wire from ARM. terminal on regulator to ARM terminal on generator.
5. Yellow/black 14 ga. wire from ARM. terminal on regulator to ignition switch.
6.Black/red wire from voltage regulator ground to generator ground.
Does anyone have the correct wiring diagram to convert this to a alternator without burning the system up?
7. Capacitor wire to ARM. terminal on regulator.
If anyone has the correct way to wire the generator to alternator I would appreciate the help. Really dont want to burn up a new wiring harness, thanks.

Hey Jeff, I have a 302 mounted on my 61 and I followed the instructions on your website for the generator to alternator swap. During the conversion I installed a new starter solenoid, and a new voltage regulator from a 73 Maverick (the one with a 302).

I might have done it wrong or something because it won't crank. I followed your instructions and triple checked them to be correct. The one area that I don’t understand is where the BLK-YEL wire comes from that goes to the Ground on the alternator. I saw that there's a YEL-BLK wire, so I used that one. I thought it might have been a typo. Please correct me, or advise if there is anything else that I might have to take a look at.

Thanks

The large yellow/black wire is to ground the alternator to the regulator. The small yellow/black goes to the GEN indicator light inside the speedo cluster. I think I remember if the GEN light is not hooked up the car will not crank. Make sure you have the red/blue wire hooked up on the starter side of the starter relay. Hope this helps.

Do yourself a favor and get a single wire alternator. Attach one wire to the post on the alternator and the other end to the positive side of the starter selonoid and you are done !!!! Wala , throw out the rest of the harness and clean up your engine compartment in the prosess. Just my 2 cents .

I agree with Jim. You also stepping up to 125+ amp alternator to feed the needy. I'm using a 4 gauge cable between the alt and solenoid.

What does the wiring diagram look like for that?
Is it much easier?

A third generation 3g alternator with a built in regulator wires to the car basically the way, the difference being you don't have the wires between between the regulator and alternator to deal with. You do however, have the wires from the car to alternator's built in regulator which are fairly simple if you get the harness for the alternator. A power wire goes to the battery or solenoid, A second wire(trigger wire) that goes to the battery side of the solenoid, a third wire that runs from the alternator to the indicator light on your dash. a forth wire that runs from one terminal on the alternator to another terminal on the alternator. I have only used the one wire GM alternators on tractors and boats which is what they were built for(along with other utility equipment of course). In all my reading, I have never heard of an automobile being produced with a one wire alternator, but evidently many people use them.
Good reading on this site. www.madelectric.com

From what I understand the one-wire alternator has the voltage regulator attached to the rear of the alternator, right?
Would I be able to use a 1995 Mustang's alternator?
I believe that those have the voltage regulator in the back also. From what I found out, those alternators have an amp rating of 130. Will that work on my set-up and allow me to eliminate my voltage regulator?

Not sure about a 95 Mustang, but one from a Tarus, Tbird, Crown Vic. Mercury, will work, none of which are a one wire. I believe the second generation alternators have the regulator attached to the back of the alternator while the 3rd generation(130 amp) are internal. BTW, no Ford had a one wire alternator. That would have to be GM or after market.
For an easy installation, find one with the same clock position as the 65 which are the ones I mentioned above.
