Driveshaft Length

I have swapped in a C4 in place of the 2-speed...

I understand that the driveshaft will need to be shortened. Does anyone happen to know how much it will need to be shortened?

(I have heard "about" an inch)

Specs:
260, C4, and stock 8" rear end.

Thanks

Stick the spline yoke into the back of the tranny, then slide it out till you have 1 to 1 1/4" sticking out past the rubber boot/seal on the trans, then get a measurement from the center of the eye on the spline yoke to the center eye of the yoke on the differential. This should be your length.
This is becoming one empty nest.

Ras is correct. I would hate to take someone word and lay down the $$'s and find out it is too long or keeps falling out of the transmission

Yes Ras is right. That measurement is known as centerline to centerline, and take it to a driveline shop. They have the correct equipment to press it together, weld it, and balance it in a balancer specifically made for driveshafts. Years ago there were machine shops that said they could do it, but it wasn't the right way. I used to work in a driveline shop building/ modifying driveshafts and I saw alot of ugly and scary work.

When you take your measurements have the car's weight on the rear springs. As the rear end goes up and down the mearsurement changes. I put the transmission yoke all the way in, measure and then subtract the proper amount for play. Same result as Ras.
