brake/tail lights don\'t work on my 62\' falcon. Need help

I've tried replacing the brake light switch and bulbs, and still no brake lights. The weird thing is, is the turn signals work but not the brake/tail lights

Possibly a bad ground or a shorted wire somewhere.
Its not impossible for a brand new brake light switch to be defective either! ask me how I know!!

Does the dome light work? Brake and dome lights usually share the same fuse. In some cases the turn signals are on a different fuse, as the turn signals use more amperage.

BTW: I most likely is not in the wiring, as the brakes and turn signals share the same feed wire.

Does it still have the pressure switch on the master?

I know my Comet has dome and tail lights on the same fuse. Turn signals and brake lights must be on a different one. Make sure you have power to and from the switches and fuses and make sure that the bulb housings are well grounded.

Thanks for the info, the car is pretty bare in the interior (no headliner, still a project) so it doesn't have a bulb in the dome. I'll try testing to see if I get any current going into the dome light, and possible get another brake light switch.

Before buying another new brake switch, you should check both sides of all fuses with a test light or VOM.

I had a similar problem once about 30 years ago. Can't remember if it was the brake or directionals that didn't work, but after tearing out the carpets to trace all the wires to the back I found out it was the directional switch in the stearing column. Turns out the brakes and directionals are tied together there so that when you switch to left or right turn signal the brake light on that side is disabled in order to blink. That is most likely the same in all older cars that use the same bulb for brake and turn.

Take a test light and check for power at your brake switch,it should burn on one side with out the brake pedal being pushed.if you have power there check the other side with the pedal pushed, and if you have power there switch is good then go to your tail lights and identify your brake light wires and test, first from wire to ground of vehicle and then to the ground wire at the light,by using this process you can find your problem if test light burns by going to the frame then your ground wire is open but i think the signal and brakes use a common ground. these little test lights are cheap and do a good job in finding electrical problems on a car.
allways remember when testing one lead goes to the wire or switch being tested and the other goes to the frame
