Galaxie column in Falcon
Since avalible parts are limited in Sweden I need to help with this.
I talked to a guy in the other end of Sweden.
He claimes that a 1963 or 1964 Galaxie steering column with automatic shifter fits in my 1962 Falcon Ranchero.
I would use the steering shaft and steering box from the Ranchero and just slide the Galaxie column on.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Or does anyone know of any other way to get a 3-speed column shifter in the Ranchero since it is hard to find Falcon shifter for 3-speed transmissions over here?
Regards Magnus

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
Do you need a shifter for a 3 speed automatic or manual?
If you need a shifter for an automatic, I know you can buy the bottom part of the automatic shift collar from Falcon Enterprises (don't know if they ship to Sweden but they might). Falcon Enterprises also carries the indicator lens and the detent plate you will need for a 3 speed automatic column. For the top part of the collar (where the turn signal switch mounts) you might be able to find one on E-bay.
The tube and the lower linkage seems to be same except the 3 speed column has an extra rod that is not necessary for an automatic linkage. When I bought my car it had the stock automatic linkage on the transmission bolted to the 3 speed column and it worked OK except there was no reverse lockout on the column and no indicator

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
My car was a 3-speed manual and I am putting an AOD in it.
With the 3-speed auto column I will have to do without the 4:th forward position but I think it will work okay anyway.
I bought parts from Falcon Enterprises before so that is not a problem, I did not know that it was possible to convert from 2-speed to 3-speed.
Still need to find an auto shifter lever.
I can get a Galaxie column at a good prise, so if enyone knows if it will fit or fit with some mods please let me know!
Regards Magnus

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
Anyone out there who can take measurements on a Galaxie column?
Total length from the turn signal and shift indicator housing at the steering wheel end to the bottom end of the outer pipe down at the steering box.
32 7/8" on my stock column.
And the diameter of the turn signal and shift indicator housing up by the steering wheel.
3 5/8" on my stock column.
Regards Magnus

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
I too switched from a three speed to an automatic in my car. I found a automatic column that fit perfect but the shift geometry was wrong. The shift arm on the column down in the engine compartment was a different length than the shift arm on the transmission so I had a choice of park, reverse and nuetral or first, second and third. I could not get all of the gears. I even bought a universal shift arm that I attached to the transmission with no success. I finally went to a Ford console and floor shift.
Later!

I do not like the sound of that!
Floor shifter kind of destroys the idea of having a bench seat.

Maybe not, if you use one of the shifters that utilizes the cable. There were quiet a few bench seat cars with manual shifters in the floor. Some of the aftermarket shifters set up higher than the stock automatic shifters and you can place them were they fit the best. Check out Summitracing.com or Jegs.

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
At that point in time, I already had the bucket seats and a column shift console. The choice was to try and find a '63 automatic column and change the detent and indicator to the C4 style or find the automatic shifter and console plate. The latter was available so I chose that way to go.

Re: Galaxie column in Falcon
I have the problem of my transmission being for a column instead of console, where the lever where the neutral cutoff switch goes is facing downward instead of upward. This is annoying because i have the shifter going backwards, and I have to get use to driving regular in my other cars (least of my worries), but i was wondering any way to modify it or any parts i can buy? This is for a 64 Galaxie.
