Manual VS Power Steering

I have a 64 Falcon Sprint Convertible. Is their any way visually to tell what kind of steering gear box is on it ( I.E. manual or power steering?)? I thought it was manual because there is no pump or power steering piston but when I bought a replacement idler arm for manual steering it was completely different and it turns out my idler arm and inner and outer tie rod ends are for power steering.

Re: Manual VS Power Steering

The late 63-64 use 1 1/8" sector shaft and very late 64 used 1" sector shaft. None of the parts interchange. The 64 uses bigger parts. Here is a pic of the 64 manual steering linkage. The power steering stuff is a different animal.

Re: Manual VS Power Steering

Thanks for the answer and picture but maybe I didn't ask the question correctly. I am trying to determine if the steering gear box is the manual or power steering version ( the gear ratio is different). My tie rod ends and Idler arm are for power steering but there isn't any other power steering paraphernalia ( I.E. pump, piston, etc) on the steering parts. I am just trying to figure out if the kid I bought this from simply took the pump and power steering piston off and left the other parts intact.

Re: Manual VS Power Steering

All 60-64 used the same ratio no matter if it was power or manual. The 65 used a different ratio but it will not fit on a 64 because of the sector shaft is the wrong size, unless the kid changed everything to 65 parts.

Re: Manual VS Power Steering

Its possible. The steering column is not original. The #s says it had a automatic and the column shifter part is not there so he probably did. It's wierd that they would use the same ratioin 64. The engineer who came up with that idea must have never ridden on a ten spped bike.

I’m pretty sure he didn’t. The 10-speed bicycle was just coming off the drawing board around this time.
