drum brakes

I have a 66 comet with drum brakes all the around. When i come to a stop it seems as if the brakes are hanging up. I can take my foot off the brake pedal and the car will just stay there. When i accelerate everything seems to be fine. Anyone have any tips for what may be causing this?

Re: drum brakes

I once had a similar problem on a Mustang. Found that problems may have occured a decade before I bought it. The two rear drums were turned to past the limits (still smooth) and the shoes were pooped and hanging up. The wheel cylinder rubbers found new ground and began dripping fluid. It was the fluid creating the surface friction then breaking it upon acceloration that had been causing the troubles.

I did not discover this situation until a rear tire went flat. As a matter of maintenace, I used to brush out the old shoe dust. That is when the problem surfaced after I removed the drum and saw inside the wetness.

Just jack up the car, yank off the drum(s) and then report back here.

Re: drum brakes

i pulled all four tires and drums, no wetness from leaky wheel cylinders.. in fact all wheel cylinders were replaced. had the drums turned and they were still within specs according to the shop that turned them. still have same problem though. it's more annoying than anything else

Re: drum brakes

Did you replace all the hardware (springs, anchors) and grease the shoe contact point on the backing plate? Is the master cylinder new or need rebuilt?

Re: drum brakes

Try replacing the rubber brake lines going to the wheel cylinders. They come apart on the inside and the brake fluid is restricted and will not let the shoes release right away.

Re: drum brakes

I second the above post... REplace the rubber lines. ALL 3

That will alleviate any fluid being trapped in the cylinders.

Other than that maybe the shoes are on Bass ackwards? THe LONGER paddded shoe goes to the rear I believe...

Re: drum brakes

Jack the car up so you can spin all 4 wheels and then apply the brakes and try to figure out which wheels are sticking..That way you can do the appropriate repairs instead of just replacing stuff till you find it..
