gas gauge sending unit?

I've been trying to fix my gas gauge.
In searching I pulled the sending unit out of the tank
and found that there is fluid in the float,
it floats in water, what gives?
Is this normal, I can't find any leak and the
brass seens in good repair?
Its an original 64 Comet sending unit.

If you wipe dry the float you should be able to see the gas seeping through where the leak is. You may need to put a small hole in the float to drain the gas. Use a soldering iron and solder the hole up. Have a good look at the seam on the brass some times they leak there.

the brass float in my 49 Willys Overland cost me about 9 buck at napa several years ago. Phone call to parts store?

Ya, I poked a hole in it and it was gas.
I took it apart and rersoldered it
floats even better now!
