make a 9" fit my 65 Falc.

I read the tech post about narrowing a 9" but still had a question. Is there any reason you can't cut the existing weld where the axle tubes come into the pumpkin?

Re: make a 9" fit my 65 Falc.

You can cut it apart anywhere you want, the problem is putting it back together so that everything thing is true. We always used an Alston
jig. It is basically a long straight steel rod with machined sleeves to fit in the centre and the axle ends so that everything is true when you tack it together. Sometimes the assembly came out so true that the rod would spin freely after the welding had cooled. Usually though it would pull one
way or the other just a hair.
Also we put braces on the back of a lot of them. So we would weld the brace on,let it cool then the axle ends.

Thanks for the input.... I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat the hardest part is figuring out the way that makes it work right.
My boss said I could machine any parts I needed for the car... I guess it's good I work in a machine shop! Thanks again

Re: make a 9" fit my 65 Falc.

How much are you going to narrow the rear end and what will your final flange outside edge to outside edge measurement be? Assume you are not going to relocate the spring perches or??

I want to get a Curie made and I am just researching the measurements that people are using. If this has all been hashed out (many times probably) just send a link

Thanks, Dave

If you haven't already seen it and used it, Currie has a great online calculator for determining your rear end, 9+ Rearend Calculator - Overall Width.

We built one a few years ago for a now gone project. Bought the pumpkin from Randy's Ring & Pinion for like $125, 3" DOM tubing and Torino style bearing ends from Art Morrison for another $125, then borrowed a friends alignment tool to set it all up with.

$250 and a couple hours and we had a rear end. Pretty cool.
