Re: Falcon will not turn off, again.

On an original or a replacement solinoid there are gererally two terminals on side that have much lighter gauge wires. Mine are snap or slip fit ends, like original but yours may be a nutted terminal.

Then this happens again, just quickly go under hood and remove the two small gauge wires fast as possible. If engine stops, then the solinoid looks to be the problem and replace it. A new solinoid is about $8 at local autoparts store, and they need replacing after a good solid 10-20 years in use.

If yanking the wires is not the problem, then it is at the key end, or maybe bum wiring.

Also opposite can happen. You engine will fire off while cranking, but then die upon releasing the key to normal. Usually the pink wire going to coil is bad somehow then.

Wm.

Re: Falcon will not turn off, again.

coos bay is right, but the right post is the one to remove of the two small ones. the one on the left is only active when the key is in the crank position....

Re: Falcon will not turn off, again.

Hey FE....

I don't know exactly who makes them but the small I and the S terminals seem to get interchanged per whoever manufactured the item.

Was digging under the hood of father's outboard Mercury motor the other day and found one of those reversed solinoids. Wire loom was shortened and per fit, so that no one could swap sides of terminals to wire lengths.

Know that many of the six volt solinoids only have one terminal.

Now, help me out on some of my Falcon questions on occasion. And why does the replies all scruntch over to the left hand margin now?

Wm.

Re: Falcon will not turn off, again.

I have the same prob with my 62 comet and 289. It's just the starter solenoid. I'll turn the key off, motor still runs. Pop the hood and tap the top of regulator with my finger and it'll shut off. Solenoid just gets stuck, I guess.
