Key stuck in "run" position

I've had this problem before, replaced the key mechanism about a year ago, and now it did it agian. It's a '65 Ranchero with 289 and C4. I can't figure out why the key keeps getting stuck in the "run" position. It won't unlock (turn to the left to the off position), but it will turn to the right (start position). I've done everything I can think of, replace the mechanism, dielectric greese, etc.

The key has unlocked (turn to the off position) on it's own, previously, but I can't figure out what prompted it to unlock. However, it seems that it's just a matter of time until it's stuck agian.

Very frustrating!

What is the cause of this? Is there a fix for this problem?

Grab the steering column cover UNDER the key and twist it to the left and see if the key comes out then.

The steering column? The key ignition is located to the right of the steering column, on the dash board. I don't understand.

Looks like you have to get another key and tumbler...

I replaced the tumbler and key last year. The new key and tumbler is the one that's stuck, now. It's the same problem I had with the old mechanism. Is there something else that could be causing the problem? If this is a common problem, and something that could be reaccuring, regardless if I replace tumbler, are there any aftermarket replacement options?

Go with a new complete switch. The Falcon and Mustang vendors sell them. Some of the new after market stuff like Drake is pure junk. I replaced my keyed items, ignition switch tumbler and door locks, and have had problems ever since.

I think I figured it out. I took the whole ignition switch mechanism appart. There was a lot of gunk in where the copper contact points are. (probably from the dielectric grease) I inspected the switch last year, it looked good, but I didn't take it completely appart, like I did this time. (assumed the tumbler was the problem) Well, not only was there a bunch of gunk in it, but the contact points were pretty well worn. So, I cleaned it up, put it back together, and it works great, for now. Going to order a new ignition switch today. That should solve the problem for good.

Kewl Beens! Sometimes the bakelite will brake inside adn skew things enough that they will bind up like a key jambing as well.
