Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

Hi 65falkone,

Just a real stupid question. What is the proper way (points) that one measures the width of a steel wheel. Is it from rim to rim, or from just inside point where the tire bead would sit? It has the Ford bolt pattern and has Ford markings (Company oval) on it.
I went to a Ford Only yard & I got plain steel rims that if measured from 'lip to lip' is 9". If measured from bead seat to seat it's about 8 1/2". I was looking for 15 x 8" steel wheels. Thanks

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I could condense the info into a bit more of a "step by step" guide with all relevant measurements.

Everything will be back together and car sitting on the ground this Saturday. I will post pics after including the all important "how does it look now from the rear shot".

As for the earlier question regarding how to measure a wheel I believe the actual width measurement is the inside of lip where the tire bead touches.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

So I tried to put it all together this weekend and..... I do need to run 1" wheel spacers. The frame to frame measurement in the tightest area is about 41.5" and the inside tire to tire clearance is 42" - just barely fits but I want more clearance. This will also bring the tire closer to the fender lip which will be fine.

As of right now the extreme outside measurement from tire to tire is 64". That is with 9.5" rims, 7" backspacing, Maverick 8" rear end and BFG G-Force 275 40 17 tires.

Ordering the wheel spacers today and should have pics up soon - will look pretty good.

Re: Widest wheels...wheels on now!

wheels on and rear end in everything fits just fine with 5/16" spacers. Lots of space to fender lip, probably 1.25" and about 1" to the leafs. I need to get longer axle studs to be safe though. I will try and get the wheel tubs welded in this weekend and then this project will be done finally. Does not help that my hard drive crashed with all my pics on it.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

After measuring again it looks like a 315 width tire would fit - just - with the right offset rim. This is without having to cut and notch the frame rail. I am considering going back to a 15" stock steel rim 10.5" wide and a more traditional looking tire profile (taller). That will be after I do the M2 front conversion though.

Hey, that looks really good! Will you be able to lower it at all, though? Looks like it's sitting a bit high...well at least for my taste.

Still looks awesome, though!!!

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I agree it is way too high at present..... With the 275's in their current location I can lower it probably 4" to 5" without any tire clearance issues - except axle hitting frame problems possibly. I am going to wait until the M2 front suspension with dropped spindles is in to see how much to lower (don't want the backend being lower than the front).
