Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I welded in the front portion of the custom "H" pattern subframe connectors. In the pic you can see the 2"x3"x .120" section of box tubing that runs side to side directly under the front seat bolt "hump" in the floor (long red arrow). There are 1.75" x 24" x .120" pipe sections welded into the factory front subframe rails (short red arows). These reach from the front where the rails go up at the fotboards and come back out through the rear of the factory rails and are welded to the box tube. The blue circle is where I plan to weld in a drive shaft loop - just not exactly sure where yet. I will be welding 2" box tubing back as well to the rear frame rails as well - I think this will be pretty beefy. You can also see the new front floor sections tacked into place.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

Thanks for the compliments. Seriously it is pretty easy. A lot of studying how and what to do before doing is key. I probably have at least 200 pics taken from the internet of others doing simillar stuff before me used as reference. I am not a welder or fabricator and this is only the second car I have done this much surgery to. So long as the car does not need to be driven right away there is alot a generally handy guy can do at home by himself - especially if he has lots of friends with tools to borrow :0

new front floor in now - pretty soon time to wire wheel and paint.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

Stock inner wheel houses are back in now with a 3" strip added to widen. I had originally planned to build my own but these fit better for some reason... Just the rear portions of the subframe connector to go and I am finally finished the welding - Thanks to my neighbor Lyle for the use of your new Miller 180!! A few pics of his crazy round body.

1" Wheel spacers, dropped spindles are here now. I can finally bolt everything together and actually have a rolling shell again. Want to have the motor in by mid July hopefully.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I figured out my motor mount system. I welded 2 pieces of 1/4" thick wall pipe that will accept a 1/2" bolt to each side of the framerail and crossmember. Each piece is 1.5" long. I will then fab 2 triangular plates for each side to attach the actual motor mount to. There will be a section of pipe welded between the plates on the motor side not shown in the high tech MS Paint cgi rendering of the mount in the pic. This will allow me to lower the motor in and fab up the mounts and bolt in without too much grief. I think this system will work well.

Hoping to have the motor in within the next month or so.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I finished scraping off all the undercoating and crust in the front wheelwells - seam sealed again and painted all with a rust paint we have here in Canada called "Tremclad" (semi-gloss black). I fabbed up the panels that go where the shock towers used to be and will paint the engine compartment semi-gloss black in the next couple of days. I will post pics once that is done. I also re-routed some of the wiring harness to be a little less ugly.
Once that is done it is motor install time!! seems like it has taken forever to get here....
I am seriously considering the "paint your car with a roller" option..... Fits really well with my "recession rod" budget. Will keep you posted if I actually go for it.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

The previous owner of my 61 Falcon used Tremclad and a roller to paint my car(It looked OK from about 1000 ft). I'm now stripping the Tremclad off and it's a real pain #$$%@##

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I am still pretty nervous with the rolling option but I am enticed by the $$. I painted a 1953 international truck a few years ago with tremclad green and it turned out surprisingly well for being sprayed on a gravel driveway....
I think the trick is in the prep, wet sanding and polishing. And of course the expectation level of the owner If I go ahead with it I will definitely try a few tests on something else first.

Re: Widest wheels..."My plan for the sedan"

I think the thing that stood out on my car was the texture from being rolled, it looked like the walls in my living room.

I seen on http://www.powerblocktv.com/site3/index.php/trucks they used an industrial paint on a jeep, they said it was economical and it looked good too.
