I have a 302 that I'm putting in my 65 ranchero and would like to use an aftermarket distributor. Any reccommendations?

Thanks for any and all replies

I favor the Mallory dual point with no vacum advance. I like this brand & have had zero problems with it. If gas economy is of importance, use one with vacum advance. If you don't want to mess with changing points, use the electronic type from them. Pertronix has a electronic setup for about $90. that replaces the points in your dist while retaining the stock look. Just depends on what you want. There are other brands, some that look like the GM distributors...but is awfully big at the dist cap. Keep in mind some dist have terminals that take large diameter plug wires too. Good luck.

Re: 302 in 65 ranchero

I've used the Pertronix unit 2 times on 2 different vehicles. Both ran and performed great. One of the units is 9 years old now. Cheap upgrade and very easy to install.
I have also run a Mallory Unilite electronic ignition. That was a nice distributor but the module was very fragile. If there was an electrical spike of voltage the module would fry. Not the distributors fault but I found the Pertronix unit was more forgiving in the same vehicle.
Good luck on your choice. Ron

Re: 302 in 65 ranchero

Thanks for the replies. The 289 that I have in it has a Pertronix unit and like it was said, it works great.
The 302 at present has a point type distributor in it but has one of those vacuum advance unit that also has a vacuum retard and I'm not all that familiar with that system. Does the retard side need to be hooked up or can I run it with only the advance side hooked up?

Use the distributor out of the 289 if the 302 is a non roller.
