Chewin the fat

In 1970 what would have been Fords runner up or best compeditor against Dodges Hemi Challenger RT?

67 Mustang with a 428, or beefy 390, or maybe the 7 Liter 67 Cougar which was a seldom seen but powerful car...

Both could do some damage to a 440 and a 383...

Re: Chewin the fat

Like frdnut said Boss 429 was the Hemi killer back then... The 428 CJ was no slug either...

To put it book wise:

70 Plymouth, Chrysler and Dodge engines were rates as follows;

318 small block 230 hp
340 SB 275 hp
383 big block 335 hp
440 BB 4V 375 hp
440 BB 6pack 390 hp
Note that they stopped making the 426 Hemi in 1969 but it did have a rated 425 HP

Meanwhile, Ford had the following specs in 1970:

302 SB 2V 210 hp
351 W SB 2V 230 hp
390 2V 255&270 hp
429 2V 320 hp
429 4v 360 HP
429 SCJ 375 HP public rating and likely 400+ in reality.
429 Boss Public rating of 375 but actual HP of 500+ HP.

In 69 and 70 Ford fudged the HP ratings of almost all their cars... The ratings were lower than what they advertised.... Those sly devils

There was no such thing as a Hemi Killer back in the day. As much as I loved Ford, they had nothing to offer even against GM. I know I was there.

I always knew Crysler was king of the hill in the late sixtys and early 70s(considering bang for your buck) and Ford follwed very closely but you paid a little more for a Ford but it was a better built car all around.

BUT seriosly though what the heck did GM(Pontiac,Builk,Olds,&Chevy) have to offer back then, What? the Chevells or GTOs with the speial order 454s pushing a wopping 360 hp. Or how about the buick GSX another "PIG" 455 pushing about 360, and the oooooww! stage 2 GSX with 375 hp. they had to have a hole nother stage to give it 15 more hp. Whipy!! Thats a very large cubic" size to be pushing about 350 hp., and most of there performance cars were geard very very low to make up for the lack in hp. Thats great till you hit about 80 and your comp. goes flying by you at 100........And untill the late 80s they had the thinest block castings out of the three.

How about the fisher body(a body made by fisher) they were nice looking, but what a peace of junk they were," TOTTAL RUST BUCKETS, with a thin frame to boot! I had a 1977 1500 chevy pick up "ones" and I was checking the oil one morning before I went to work and when I tried to close the hood the dam thing folded on me right down the hole f#$!ckin hood going east and west, I couldnt belive it!!! and when I was getting in the truck after I maniged to get the hood shut and I looked down at the door or on the threashold and there were the words "a body made by fisher".

General Motors is perfect example of Quanity and not Quality, then and today too.......

One more thing in the late 60s I didnt here of GM winning any Rally races in Europe ageinst big fancy names like Ferrarri, Porsh, and Fiat. From 69-70 there fords came in 1 2 3 in a row race after race, and since the early 60s ford has been a very serios compeditor in European racing, wich has the best car name brands in the world.

Im sorry everybody if any of that came off negative, but all that just had to be said..!!

PS. My hp with the GMs might be a little off, but I think I was being generous
