Repairing Window Crank Assemblys

I have a 1960 Falcon and the drivers door window hangs as it goes up and down. I can see that the felt is bunching up on the sides. I would like to repair it myself, but don't have a clue how. Any suggestions. Thanks

Re: Repairing Window Crank Assemblys

go to falconparts.com and buy a new Felt kit, then take the window out, remove the channel, stake out teh old junk and put in the new junk.

Pretty simple. Good Luck and Welcome to Ford Muscle! Post pics of your Round Falcon!

Re: Repairing Window Crank Assemblys

We have an auto uphostery wholesale place near to here. They had the door channel guide materials at about $4 per strip of some standard length. Used tin snips too cut appropriate length, the top portion got curved over my knee and installed too. Took longer to drive over and purchase than to install.

Three side averaged about $15 per door then.

We argued about a headliner material for like 20 minutes, but that is anothter story.

This stuff is common and around and you do not need to purchase fancy cello wrapped and labeled packages from some dealer.

Re: Repairing Window Crank Assemblys

How to remove etc. is all inside the official auto manual. Take you about 15 minutes to get the stuff out of door if still on the auto. But you gotta know your tool inventory and uses.

In the manual, they cite a number of special tools to which you cannot get anymore, but replacements are around all over the place. I cut up the window crank remover from sheet metal and tin snips, the very same ones used to cut the window runners. Took longer to find that appropriate shape of sheet metal in the pile. Find a good tipped set of screw drivers.

I had a few extra doors here, and stole a window regulator out of one of them on driver's side instead of fixing the old one. Saved me 3/4 of a day of work. Clean and lube good, even if no one sees it once installed.

I removed the felt strips that are at upper window sides with new clips. Cost about $3 each side. Do it then, as you cannot get to these suckers without going through same routine as for the window edges. Understand repeat work again?

Overall, minus painting exterior and interior, greasing lubing the window regulator and hinges, cost me less than $50 for two front doors. But that was three years ago too, as they work is still going on.

Bent the door lock key a year ago, and had to go back to the old door supplies and....
