1969 Mach 1 Restoration - Slide Show

This three-part series was on YouTube. It's entertaining, though the music gets annoying.

Part 1:

Re: 1969 Mach 1 Restoration - Slide Show

Questions:

What was that coat they put on of dark red, before the final three coats were appllied?

How long between coats, or just started again after once around?

How long to wait for clear coat application?

What happens if you wait a day before clear coat?

I have painted cars in the back yard before, but that was 25 years ago.

I never did more then 2 coats, and never used clear coat. I will be painting my 66 in the back yard, I can not afford the $5000.00 everyone in my neighborhood wants to charge me. I figure for $800.00 in paint and materials, I will get a very good paintjob.

Base coat to clear coat is 20 minutes minimum (depending on humidity and temp and reducer) to a couple hours if necessary. I've known people to wait a whole day to clear but they wet sanded the base first (I don't recommend waiting a whole day, you will get a much poorer adhesion to the basecoat in my opinion)

I didn't watch the video's becasue the 69 is NOT a body style I care to look at... Sorry...

If your painting outside, the odds will be against you most of the way. Some do's and do not's. Keep the car out of the sun, the metal needs to be at a normal temp. Don't paint under a tree. Us lots of water on the ground and surrounding areas. Paint early in the morning when there's less wind and daily heat. Check the weather. Use correct reducer for your temp. expected. Let each coat tack longer than required. If major flaw becomes a issue, STOP and stop wasting the paint and money. Find a paint shop and try to rent their booth on a weekend. Let the mess made dry good and reprep the car for a reshoot. All the above varies with the type of paint being used and your talents. Good Luck
