Maybe Subaru put just a bit more effort to modify it to STI? And don´t get confused, I´m not much into these plastic bullets.
What does sti need to go faster? a chip?
I´m just glad my -66, and yes, even my -66, can whip both of their asses...
How do you shave 1000 pounds of a Tank size new mustang... I mean easily?
EDIT: Almost forgot. Which of these cars had a functioning hood scoop???

That price for the new STI is kinda high, but the WRX, at least up to 07, is a great bang for the buck if you want to mod it later.
I had an 02 WRX 5 speed. With a header, a laptop, and a OBDII cable I ran 13.28 @ 104mph. A grand total of $300 in parts, if you already have a Windoze computer. Through the stock muffler, and stock turbocharger, and the 2.0L four that none STI's came with until 2006.
With an $800 turbo, and a dremel to mod the injectors, 11's are possible with the same gas mileage and street manners.
I could regularly knock out 25mpg, and it was pretty easily driven in all weather (snow, rain, ect).
The weakest link was the transmission, which was known to eat gears (T-5, anyone?) when the abuse/power levels rose.
WRX's are like an AWD Foxbody with better gas mileage...except less common.
So, I know we love to slam imports here, but some of them are worth a moments notice...or at least watching yourself at the stoplight.

The STI does have a functional hood scoop. The Shelby GT Mustang hood scoop isn't functional, although the "heat extractors" on the GT500 are functional. The hood scoops on the GT500KR and SuperSnake are functional as well.

Re: '08 STI vs '07 Shelby Mustang
Oh yeah, while I do address myself as a muscle car guy and not a ricer guy, I do have to say that I did love the previous STI. While the styling behind it wasn't my favorite, it was quirky enough and strong enough to hold it's own. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would still take a Mustang GT over an STI any day due to my passion for V8's, the STI is a damn good car....

Re: '08 STI vs '07 Shelby Mustang
My buddies 99 trans am WS-6 with mild cam and headers; keeps up with the new gt 500s without breaking a sweat. If ford didnt make them so dang heavy, maybe they would actually have a chance against a Z06.

Re: '08 STI vs '07 Shelby Mustang
The Shelby's not really very impressive, I'm sorry to say. As pointed out
before, it apparently has a bit of a "weight" issue. It takes a lot of hp to
overcome that kind of disadvantage obviously, since the Subi only has
306 hp or so. And the price! You can get an STI all day and all night at
$34 large, they'll sell you as many as you want. With the Shelby, you
won't get it for sticker, they'll add serious $'s on top of that. (That's
what our local Ford dealer does with anything "Shelby") The last one I
looked at had something like 10 grand tacked on........
2007 Fusion
2005 Five Hundred
2002 Subaru WRX
1968 Mustang
1966 Mustang GT

Re: '08 STI vs '07 Shelby Mustang
Chevy is even making the gap wider on the weight issue, thier new performance corvette will have a supercharger also, something like 650HP, and be about 200lbs less then the z06 currently is.
Ford seems to have forgotten what performance is and how to get it, they lost it in the seventies, got it back in the eighties, had it for a bit in the nineties and tottally threw it out the window again.
I guess we can at least be happy the new mustangs look kinda nice *shrug*.

Re: '08 STI vs '07 Shelby Mustang
0.02 Cents.
I must strongly disagree with a lot of the negative replies about the Subaru in the video.
I own my second Subaru Wagon. I will never buy another brand for a daily driver. First one went to 260,000 miles with nothing but new timing belts, one altinator, and one new clutch. I beat the crap out of it every day, and I am very ruff on cars. Red line it 10 times a day 300 days a year in first gear.
All wheel drive, never have to use any breaks on 40 MPH off-ramp/on-ramps s-curves while driving at 75 MPH. 6 of them a day. No other cars have been able to follow me through the s-curves at those speeds in 10 years.
Just bought my second one a 2002 with 100,000 miles on it last summer. This car will also go to 250,000, no problem, or I would not have spent $10,000 to buy a 5 year old car with 100K.
Subaru's cost $25,000 new and 5 years laster they are still worth $16,000. They hold there value very well.
My 66 mustang is a lot faster then the subaru, and I have a lot of pride driving it, but fun in the corners can only be found with sticky tired all-wheel drive.
Buddy at work has a 9.00 second twin turbo, water injected, 4 cylindar STI, and runs around very other car at the oval track in NH. 6 speed, changes gears about every 2 seconds, and has adjustable power control to shift power to the front or rear, and anywhere in between, while live racing to adjust for track conditions.
Ford has a long way to go to catch up. Sorry folks, but lets be honest here. The 4200 Pound 2008 500 HP Mustang is a show boat for rich folks that can afford them, just to impress the neighbors. Sure I would like to have one, but take a drive in any Subaru before putting them down. You will be amazed what real cornering feels like. Actually doesn't feel like, since the car barley leans into the corner. PS: I get 27 MPG.
