Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

Great Vid Murff.

But please help a guy to understand...

Car weight:

Wheel horsepower

Flywheel horsepower

Horsepower:

1/4 Mile elapsed time =

So, it takes 574 HP at the wheels according to this calculator to get into the 9 second 1/4 mile...
I can't figure the math but WHY does it take a 7,000 HP car an entire 5 second trip to do the 1/4 when I think it should be NEARLY INSTANTANEOUS... 7,000 HP is a gawd awfull lot!

Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

FE, at those power levels it becomes all about putting it to the track in a usable manner.

Clutch slippage, tire spin, inertia all come in to play. If one of those cars dead hooked, that is, had 100% power to the rear wheels and 100% traction to match, it would either flop over backwards or, more likely, quickly find the weakest component in the car.

Frame, driveline, rear gears, clutch, without some slippage something is going to go boom.

Have you ever watched videos of big block twin turbo cars making a pass? (I know you don't go to the strip much) Most naturally aspirated cars will wheelstand at the hit. The heavily boosted turbo cars will launch soft, and then as rpms increase and the turbo's spool up to full boost will lift the front tires at 1/2 track or so and carry the fronts in the air across the finish line.

There's a video of a pass a guy made in a turbo Mustang where he pulls the wheels at the hit and carries them all the way through an 1/8 mile pass at like 185 mph. Guys name is Tim Lynch, pretty well known in the Outlaw 10.5 circle.

Better yet, here's that clip.

Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

OK, I can see, but why in the hell do you need 8,000 HP if you only get to put 945(or some sane #) to the track?

Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

Sure bigger and more powerful is better etc...

How do you dyno a 7000+ HP car?

Last race track I went to was in 1985 at the Red Rocks in Denver... Saw my first ever Willys CJ2A style jeep do 9.44 qtr mile with a Ginormous Ford motor in it

Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

Those guys are nuts! And they must have some really big ones too to drive something like that.

Re: If You Like Drag Racing...

I LOVE that video of Tim Lynch, thats so cool. Sure they cant put 8000 hp to the track at launch but they put a few thousand down toward the end of the track. Isnt that one of the toughest things to set on those cars is how fast the clutch slips and then starts to lock up, so they dont blow the tires away but still put as much power down as possible??
