Your right, you can go a heck of a lot faster pushing air/fuel than sucking through a carb. You can spend a lot of money on various turbos/super chargers etc. But you can also do it on the cheap if your smart and creative.
I saw a 5.0 Mustang in Puerto Rico (Salinas), looked like junk, sounded like junk, didnt think the car would go. It clicked off a 10:20 (faster than his buddies Fox with the 514 crate NA set up at 10:50) Went to have a look, stock 302, stock heads, fairly mild cam, home built twin turbo set up blowing through the carb. Looking at this thing, I would have jumped all over it for a grudge run, it would have kicked my butt.

An example is Mike Sitar's site TooHighPSI.com. That budget-build T-Bird uses a bone stock (cast pistons and all) 351 from an '86 E-150 van with a cam and heads to cut 9.95@140 mph. That was in 2005. And there are many other even more impressive examples all over the 'net, like on the TurboForums. These guys are going fast without trying very hard - but they listened at least a little to those that have already done it and added some of their own creativity.
