How to tell a 289 from 260

I was just reading the list options and specs on the 1963 galaxies. I found it came with a 260 or 289 (amongst other engines) how do i tell what i have. I havent bought any engine parts. I looked on ebay for 289 intake manifolds and they look like mine but then again so does the 260. So is there any easy way's to tell. Like distibutor location or somthing else.

Both the 260 and 289 are from the Ninety Degree Engine Family (221-260-289-302-5.0L-351W)

Most everything is interchangeable from the 221 to the 302.

The engine code (as assembled) will be within the VIN No.

Kultulz,
just wondering where you are at in Rockville, I grew up there and still have friends in the area. Did you hit the Rockville car show at the civic center a few weeks back? I missed it for the first time in 5 years. I'm in the process of beginning a resto on a 63 galaxie convert, not sure whether to go street rod or stock. Bad question for this forum I know!

Soooo if i get a edelbrock torquer intake and 500 CFM 4 barrel for a 289 it should fit even if its a 260. It might be a 260 it seems grossly under powered but i am atributing alot of that to having to small of carbeurator.Its got a 2 barrel on it now and if you have ever felt the kick when all a 4 barrels of a carb open up then you know what this thing is missing. Basically I NEED MORE POWER of course dont we all

Blury,
Indeed most parts are interchangable between the 260 and 289. I have a 260 in my Falcon and have a 4-Barrel Weiand Intake. And yes that Galaxie is "grossly" underpowered with 260 or 289... No offense to anyone, but no small block belongs in a Galaxie.

Note: 289 is same as the 260 except for the bore, cranks are interchangable.
One thing I did find that was specific to the 260 was the harmonic balancer, snout on the 289 crank is different, or something like that.

How to tell a 289 from 260

Ok cool thats what I want to know. Next question. Whats the best carbs for street use. I once drag raced and i hated Holley carbs for that. Of course that was a supercharged motor and i could never keep them tuned and they always load up and spit. But street use is completely diffrent. So right now im thinking Edlebrock torquer intake with Edlebrock 500 CFM carb. Or maybe 600 CFM havent decide yet. When i raced i raced Demons(after i got sick of Holley). Are those good for the street. Seems like they would be.

All my street cars until now have Fule injected. My drag car was the only carb car i have ever had.

I read some where that when buying an aftermarket carb for the street. Meaning the motor will be lightly bulit with cams, headers ETC. which this will be. That you take the number of cubic inches and double it and thats neigborhood of CFM you should be running. So 550 or 600 CFM should work for the 289. Or at least the theory sounds good.

Hadn't heard that one but does make sense anyway. Even in stock terms I think. My stock 390 had the stock carb which was a 600 cfm. But I suppose if it was built a bit then a person would want to go higher. I'll have to remember that. At least I can calculate that far,
2xY=CFM(est).

I believe the two main differences are the 260 has only five bolt holes for the bellhousing compared with six for the 289 & secondly the starter is on the drivers side as compared with the starter being on the passenger side on the 289.
