Biggest, Widest Tire for 65\' Galaxie...Best Hookup Tire?

Hey Guys! Along from getting the engine ready, tires and rims have came into mind for near future.

Question:

Does anyone know if 295/50/15 would fit in stock galaxie Rear wells with a 2'' raised rear?

The only available tires for this size are street tires:

295/50-15 BFG Radial T/A=$98, Dunlop GT Qualifier T=$83, Firestone Indy 500=$89, Goodyear Eagle GT II=$94

If not, it's going to be either the 275/60/15 or the 275/50/15 , and I'm plannin on going for the BF Drag Radials.

Can anyone debate Regular Street tires (the ones listed above vs BF Drag Radials?).

The BF DR have a 15,000 mile warrantee, and around about 150 bucks a pop. I'm thinking with 4.11 gears with my 390, I'm gonna a tire that will hook.....

Any opinions or Comments?

say how goes the 65? is she gonna be ready for the big swap meet in monroe? im hoping my 62 will be all back together by then, i doubt it though.

I am running 245/60R14's on mine, with a stiff, higher than normal suspension. You may get a 255/60R15 under the back, but I would be suprised if a 275 fits..

Dyno Tom has 275's on his and I know he had room to spare. Backspace is the key here, I'm thinking about 4.5" on an 8" rim.

Yea....Chuck hassa good point....those 65 and 66 rear wells sure look the same but,like he says they are smaller on a 65 so fitting bigger tires are not as easy as a 66.......

FWIW, I run a 15 x 8 Weld with 4 1/2 backspacing. The '67 wheel opening is also smaller than a '66, but it might be about the same as a '65. I run a 235/70-15 which is about 9 1/4 wide and 28 tall with no issues at all.

As far as raised, these pics were taken with brand new rear springs that settled a couple of inches and looked alot less like a 4X4[img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img]




But again, this is on a '67..........

I run 245-60-15 on a 15x8 rim with a 4.5" backspace. There is .5" clearance between the outside of the tire and the fender lip. If you want to go bigger it would have to be to the inside--a custom 5 or 5.5 inch backspace rim might do it.

I don't think raising the car an inch or two improves clearance much because the top of the tire will still be inside of the wheel opening and that is the tight spot.
