T-Bird/Cougar sway bar?

My step-dad is going to pick up the front disc brakes from a '77 Cougar from the local junk yard. He was asking me if the sway bar would work on his '66 Galaxie also. I remember reading something about using one, but with modifications. Anyone done this? What were the mods?

I have used the PST 1 1/8" bar on another Galaxie, and just ordered front/rear sway bars for the XL, and know the bigger bars make a huge difference! He was just wondering if it was worth picking up when he grabs the brakes.........

Thanks in advance!

Jim

T-Bird/Cougar sway bar?

Yep, have him grab BOTH the front and rear sway bars plus the bushing mounts from the Cougar. A few years ago, I sold a pair of '78 T-Bird bars to a friend with a '66 7 Litre and as I recall, the front was a pretty much of a bolt-on other than replacing the crossmember bushings with the larger diameter T-Bird's. The rear took a bit of fab, but nothing major. It seems like all it took was building two mounts out of channel iron that mounted the bar to the rear axle, and fabbing the two links that mount to the frame rails. It'll be pretty self explanatory when he removes the rear bar.

My friend reported a big improvement in handling by using both T-Bird bars.

T-Bird/Cougar sway bar?

I put a '78 tbird front swaybar on my '65; its nearly a bolt-in. I looked around at the U-pull-it and found a car with a 1-1/8" diameter bar.

It is almost exactly the same shape as the stock one and is the right width; all he'll need to do is move are the brackets that mount the bar to the frame. Each bracket has 3 holes, I reused the top hole and drilled new holes in teh frame for the other two and used self tapping bolts. He'll need to buy new mount bushings with the right diameter for the new bar and new bushings for the end links. It took me about two hours altogether.

Man what a difference, one of the best improvements I have made on the car and it cost $40.

I'm fairly the front bar can be made to work, Doug. I remember hearing this discussed on another Galaxie list a few years ago. When I get over this damn sinus infection.... I'll try to get some basic measurments from my '64 and my 'Bird for you. Congrats on gettin' the 'Liner running! Can't wait to see her at Woodward...
