67 Galaxie vs. LTD- same parts?
As something of an LTD enthusiast since childhood (parents had a '67) I have the following observations. It's true that a section had to be welded in to make the quarter windows smaller, which incidentally are the same ones as for convertibles. This explains the standard vinyl roof on the 2-doors, it was easier to cover in in vinyl than metal finish the patch. This also explains why the roofs are padded. 67 LTDs, especially the 2 doors are a unique combination of firsts, onlys and lasts. It was the first year for a 4 door sedan in the line. It was the only year for a unique 2 door bodystyle shared with no other model, the only year for a standard vinyl roof on the 2-door,
the only year for unique LTD only wheel covers, and the
only year for standard Comfort-Stream ventilation. It was the last year until 1972 for a standard automatic trans,
(1968 reverted to 3 on the tree to quote a lower base price). It was the last year for a high level interior standard, which included cut pile carpet, door courtesy lights including the REAR doors on 4 doors, and the center folding rear armrest. In 1968, the standard LTD was cheapened considerably , once again to quote a lower base price. No center armrests, no Comfort-Stream, no door lamps, loop pile carpet .Barely better than a Galaxie 500 Ordering the Brougham interior restored most of the former luxury but the rear door lights on 4 doors were gone forever.Even if you did order the Brougham package, Comfort-Stream was still extra, as was a Twin-Comfort front seat. The addition of hide-away headlights was scant compensation for this, imho. Things got even worse in '69, with the mid-year deletion of the clock and full wheel covers. A standard '69 LTD amounts to little more than a Galaxie 500 with hidden headlights. And, don't get me wrong and flame me because even though I like '69s, there was a considerable quality drop that year. They rusted more quickly and assembly quality took a turn for the worse. This is empirically born out by personal experince with my parents '69 . That's why I consider the 1967 LTD 2 door hardtop to be the most desirable of the entire breed
