My dying C6 tranny- what to do?

I've got metal shavings in my '67 automatic transmission and she takes forever to shift into drive (or anything except reverse, for that matter) when I first start her each morning. Once she finally gets going she's great.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, but those seem like warning signs to me!

Could anyone give me a rough estimate of what I should expect a rebuild to cost me? Would it be cheaper to go with a new tranny instead of just rebuilding the one I've got? Would it be heresy to not use the original tranny anymore?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter?
Start there, if it hasn't been changed in a while the accumulation of material in the pan could be normal wear and tear and the screeen might be plugged. Does the fluid smell burned? Anyway it won't cost you that much so start there and see if it improves, it's a lot easier than pulling the tranny. If that does not improve the problem it may have what we called "morning sickness" caused by the torque converter draining down overnight. To repair this requires changing the converter and flushing out the system.________________

if you are required to remove the tranny then rebuilding
the c-6 is the best route plan on $600.00 to $800.00 depending on who you go to, a new converter will be an additional $100.00 to $300.00 depending on the brand name
there are not any better trannys automatic than the c-6 for strength however you can purchase adaptors from Mcleod to bolt on an aod to your fe block if you go with staying with the c-6 then I suggest buying a core from a salvage yard and having it built and buy a new converter then you can remove the tranny and install the newly built one in the same day
